The Upper Paleolithic Assemblages of Shugnou, Tajikistan
Lithic industries from the key stratified Upper Paleolithic site at Shugnou, Tajikistan, are described. Results of the technological, typological, and attributive analyses suggest that the industries of all horizons represent a single cultural tradition. Its evolution was marked by a gradual transformation of the microblade technology with the use of carinate techniques. This tradition is paralleled by lithic assemblages from Kulbulak layers 2.1 …
The correlation between Hamra and the Paleolithic on the Coastal Plain of the Southern Levant
Fieldwork and literature studies indicate that Paleolithic sites of the coastal plain in the Southern Levant were connected with climatic changes and transgressive‐regressive cycles of the Mediterranean Sea. The presence of archaeological sites corresponds with periods of regressions, during which hamra (a local variety of red soils) formed and was subsequently reworked by slope processes. When the hamra was inundated by shallow lakes, people cou…

Recent work on the Paleolithic of Central Asia
Central Asia has played an important role in Paleolithic archeology since the discovery of Teshik-Tash in 1938. Since the 1970s, attention has turned to Lower Paleolithic studies following the important discoveries at Kul'dara and other deeply stratified loess sites in southern Tajikistan. The sites, dated to as early as 800,000 years ago, are not the earliest evidence of hominids in Asia, but they do reflect early adaptations to arid mid-latitud…

Toward a New Outline of the Soviet Central Asian Paleolithic [and Comments and Reply]
The ideas about the distribution of the earliest sites in Soviet Central Asia and the character of Paleolithic industries which have been formed by Western archaeologist through the works of Movius, Klein, and Chard are now in need of revision because of the appearance of new material. The increasing possibility of worldwide synchronization of geological and climatological events permits the comparison of the subdivisions of the Soviet Central As…
