  • Climate variability in the northern Levant from the highly resolved Qadisha record (Lebanon) during the Holocene optimum

Open Access•Carole Nehmé, Sophie Verheyden et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

New stalagmites from Qadisha Cave (Lebanon) located at 1720 m above sea level provide a high-resolution and well-dated record for northern Mount Lebanon. The stalagmites grew discontinuously from 9.2 to 5.7 and at 3.5 ka, and they show a tendency to move from a more negative oxygen isotope signal at ~9.1 ka to a more positive signal at ~5.8 ka. Such a trend reflects a change from a wetter to a drier climate at high altitudes. The δ 13 C signal sh…

  • Isotopic Data on Diet and Mobility from Pictish and Viking Age Orkney

Open Access•Alexandra Johnson, Christophe Snoeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2024

Changes in diet and mobility isotopes from the Late Iron Age or Pre-Viking phase (PVP, AD 550–790) through the Viking Age (VA, AD 790–1050) and Late Norse phase (LNP, AD 1050–1300) can be used to suggest nuanced socioeconomic and political change, including differences in subsistence practices and social constructs of ethnicity, religion and status [1234567]. We present here isotopic analysis on some 292 individuals from 10 sites across Orkney, i…

  • Phytoplankton bloom distribution and succession driven by sea-ice melt in the Kong Håkon VII Hav

Open Access•Megan Lenss, Sébastien Moreau et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2024

The existence of ice-edge phytoplankton blooms in the Southern Ocean is well described, yet direct observations of the mechanisms of phytoplankton bloom development following seasonal sea-ice melt remain scarce. This study constrains such responses using biological and biogeochemical datasets collected along a coastal-to-offshore transect that bisects the receding sea-ice zone in the Kong Håkon VII Hav (off the coast of Dronning Maud Land). We do…

Little is known about terrestrial climate dynamics in the Levant during the penultimate interglacial-glacial period. To decipher the palaeoclimatic history of the Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 glacial period, a well-dated stalagmite (~194 to ~154 ka) from Kanaan Cave on the Mediterranean coast in Lebanon was analyzed for its petrography, growth history, and stable isotope geochemistry. A resolved climate record has been recovered from this …

Sinds 2010 bieden verschillende platformen …

Like many cities, Brussels faces increasing water issues like urbanization spreading and stresses on the water resources. Integrated Water Management (IWM) in urban planning tackles these problems focusing on the landscape features, but requires extensive cartographic data. Since 2010, different platforms offer cartographic data for the Brussels and Flemish regions, but these initiatives are independent and often not coherent. This article analys…

Associée à l’urbanisme, la gestion intégrée des ressources en eau (GIRE) permet de répondre à ces problèmes en s’intéressant aux particularités du paysage, mais requiert d’importants volumes de données cartographiques. • Characterization of Archaeological Metal Remains in Micromorphological Thin Sections Using μXRF Elemental Mapping

Open Access•Barbora Wouters, Christina Makarona et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 5

The soil micromorphological examination of thin sections obtained from archaeological profiles is a well‐established approach in geoarchaeology. However, it provides only limited information about the nature of metal inclusions (shape and taphonomy but not elemental composition). Laboratory micro‐X‐ray fluorescence (μXRF) elemental mapping is a non‐destructive technique that can be applied directly to the resin‐impregnated sediment blocks from wh…

Open Access•Virginie Renson, Ariane Jacobs et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 11

This paper presents the lead isotopic composition of potential clay sources for pottery production, collected in the four major geological zones of Cyprus (Troodos Ophiolite, Circum Troodos Sedimentary Succession, Mamonia Terrane, Kyrenia Terrane) and evaluates its usefulness in Cypriote pottery provenance studies. The clay isotopic signatures from the four zones are compared to each other and to the isotopic composition of various utilitarian po…

  • Quantitative WD‐XRF calibration for small ceramic samples and their source material

Open Access•Francois De Vleeschouwer, Virginie Renson et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 2

A wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (WD‐XRF) calibration is developed for small powdered samples (300mg) with the purpose of analyzing ceramic artifacts that might be available only in limited quantity. This is compared to a conventional calibration using a larger sample mass (2g). The comparison of elemental intensities obtained in both calibrations shows that the decrease in analyzed sample mass results in a linear decrease in measured i…

Lead isotopes, thin‐ and sherd‐section analyses are coupled on pottery‐vessel fragments excavated from the Late Bronze Age site of H ala S ultan Tekke (south‐east C yprus) and representing fabrics used for the production of storage and trade containers. The fabrics of the sherds are first described according to general macroscopic observations. Based on the different fabrics identified, a petrographic analysis is carried out on thin sections and …

Lead isotopic compositions were measured for 65 sherds from five pottery wares (Plain White, Coarse, Canaanite, White Slip and Base-ring) excavated from the Late Bronze Age site of Hala Sultan Tekke (Cyprus). The elemental composition and isotopic signature of the sherds were compared with those of 65 clay samples collected in south-east Cyprus, mainly in the surroundings (<20 km) of Hala Sultan Tekke. This work shows the effectiveness of using l…
