  • First Younger Dryas-Early Holocene varve chronology of the Russian Plain

    Open Access•L V Shasherina, Mikhail Alexandrin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026

Annually-laminated lake sediments (varves) are among the most reliable archives for high-resolution paleoenvironmental reconstruction. However, the Russian Plain has remained a gap in the global distribution of varve chronologies. This preliminary study presents the first Younger Dryas Early Holocene varve chronology from Lake Kasplya (western part of the Russian Plain). A 17.3 m sediment core (Kas-17) was retrieved in 2022, of which the 9.6–15.2…

  • Radiocarbon dates provide a revised chronology of the Lower Don Eurasian steppe archaeological cultures

Open Access•Natalia Shishlina, Nadezhda Leonova et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Bayesian modeling applied to accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dates on samples associated with burials and seasonal campsites of various cultures suggests a revised chronology for the Sal steppes and northern fringes of the Kuma-Manych Depression in the Lower Don region in the south of the Russian Plain. The new chronological framework makes it possible to eliminate existing time gaps and refine or extend chronological periods…

  • Meat Supply of Alakul Miners at the Bronze Age Vorovskaya Yama Copper Mine (Southern Trans-Urals)

    P S Ankusheva, A Yu Rassadnikov et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2026•Cited by: 2•References: 78

In this paper, we analyze what can be learned about the meat supply of the Alakul miners of the Late Bronze Age using archaeozoology, Sr-isotope analysis, and radiocarbon dating techniques. The study is based on a sample of domestic animal bone originating from the Vorovskaya Yama copper mine site in the southern Trans-Urals. The site functioned over a period of about two centuries starting around 1600 BCE. Cattle, caprines, and horses constitute…

  • Radiocarbon dating of the end of the latest Caspian Sea overflow through the Manych Depression (southeastern European Plain)

    Open Access•Daria V Semikolennykh, A V Panin et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•Cited by: 1

The Manych Depression is a relatively narrow elongated depression of tectonic origin, connecting the Caspian and Azov-Black Sea basins. The Caspian Sea repeatedly discharged its waters through this depression into the Black Sea and further into the Mediterranean Sea during the Quaternary period. The last discharge occurred in MIS 2 when the Khvalynian transgression waters exceeded the drainage divide between those two basins. The geochronology of…

    Open Access•Y V Kuzmin, Sergey V Leshchinskiy et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 28

A summary of the chronology for the key paleontological and archaeological site of Volchia Griva in the southern part of the West Siberian Plain is presented. Currently, 42 reliable 14 C values have been generated on animal bones (37 14 C dates) and charcoal (5 14 C dates). Three stratigraphic levels of animal bones are established. The 14 C ages of the fossils are as follows: the upper level—ca. 10,620–12,520 BP; the middle level—ca. 13,700–17,8…

    Open Access•Andrey Epimakhov, Elya P Zazovskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 22

This research aims to contribute to our knowledge of the chronology of the main cultural entities of the Bronze Age in the Southern Urals. The objectives of this work include the verification of earlier conclusions regarding individual sites, expanding the date series for the key cultures with reliable dates, and creating reference series for the Bayesian modeling of key archaeological sites. Thirty-two samples were selected from reliable context…

  • Chronology of the Upper Palaeolithic Sites of Byki (Centre of the East European Plain) According to 14C and OSL Dating

A V Panin, Natalya Akhmetgaleeva et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2024

Series of 14C dates from cultural layers (CL) of Byki sites are in the range 1—5 thousand years. Simple statistical processing does not allow to narrow down the age estimates. To assess the reliability of 14C dates, we developed an approach based on the assessment of sedimentation dynamics using luminescence (OSL) dating and age determination of the main lithostratigraphic units. The OSL method was used to date the section of the multilayer site …

  • Late-Holocene advances of the Greater Azau Glacier (Elbrus area, Northern Caucasus) revealed by 14 C dating of paleosols

    Open Access•Olga N Solomina, A L Alexandrovskiy et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022

Three paleosols buried in the left lateral moraines of the Greater Azau Glacier (Northern Caucasus) were identified in an excavated outcrop (43.2658 N, 42.4766 E, 2370 m a.s.l.). When the glacier was overlying the surface of the lateral moraines at this site, the thickness of the ice was 50 m and more above the valley floor. Fragments of charcoal from the uppermost soil (S1) buried 0.6 m below the surface yielded the radiocarbon date 130 ± 20 yr …
