The new key sections of the Last Interglacial transgression in the Eurasian Arctic (Eastern White Sea)
A multi-proxy centennial-resolution paleoecological record of Holocene lake sediments in the marginal zone of Last Scandinavian Glaciation (Tver Region, Russia)
Sedimentologic successions and chronology of the late Pleistocene deposits on the southern Kola Peninsula, northern Europe
Late Pleistocene deposits in the southern Kola Peninsula, adjacent to the White Sea, evidence the complex alternation between marine transgressions and glacial expansions in northern Europe during successive late Pleistocene warm and cold stages. According to lithostratigraphic and chronological data from key sections, southern Kola Peninsula underwent two phases of the Boreal marine transgression during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5; marine envir…
Holocene vegetation dynamics, river valley evolution and human settlement of the upper Kama valley, Ural region, Russia
The Beginning and Early Years of Radiocarbon Dating in Russia
We present an overview of the beginning and early years of radiocarbon dating in Russia. Achievements of several major scholars in this field from Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Moscow and Novosibirsk are briefly described. The existing and closed Russian laboratories are also mentioned
Radiocarbon chronology of the Neolithic – Chalcolithic sites of the extreme European northeast
Hare Tracks” in the Upper Palaeolithic in the centre of the East-European Plain (an overview)
Radiocarbon Dating of Holocene Archaeological Sites in the Far Northeast of Europe
The paper is devoted to the critical analysis of the radiocarbon dating results of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic complexes of the northeastern part of the East European Plain (Republic of Komi, Arkhangelsk and Vologda Regions and the Nenets Autonomous Area, Russian Federation). The comprehensive evaluation of all available geochronometric data in relation with the studied archaeological events highlighted the following three data sets: r…
Human palaeoenvironment in the Upper Kama River basin
Here, we present the results of comprehensive (archaeological and palaeoecological) studies undertaken in 2014-2018 in the basin of the Upper Kama River in the north of Perm Region, eastern part of the East European Plain. The main objects for the research were archaeological sites, primarily their chronological attribution and localization specifics. In total, 100 sites belonging to a wide chronological range from the Mesolithic to the Late Midd…

Geochronology, stratigraphy, and evolution of Middle Uralian peatlands during the Holocene (exemplified by the Shigir and Gorbunovo peat bogs)
Integrated studies on several peat-gyttja sections, including Mesolithic and Neolithic cultural layers, were conducted for the Shigir and Gorbunovo peatlands of the Middle Urals. The results of plant macrofossil and pollen analyses were used to reconstruct the history of peat formation, vegetation, and climate changes during the Holocene. The radiocarbon dating of archaeological artifacts and enclosing sedimentary layers were used to reconstruct …
Interdisciplinary studies of the Cis-Ural Neolithic (Upper Kama basin, Lake Chashkinskoe)
In this paper we present preliminary results of the first palaeoecological investigations in the Cis-Ural region. This was an area of intensive Neolithic occupation of fluvial landscapes within the basin of the Upper Kama River, the largest river in the area. We selected the area of Lake Chashkinskoe as a key region, where around 10 sites have been found on the remains of the fluvial terraces of the Kama River. We used palaeochannel analysis, rad…
Paleochannel Studies in Archaeology
Geological and geomorphological settings are often taken into account when choosing strategy in archaeological studies. In the Vychegda River valley (Archangelsk Province, Komi Republic), at the end of the Late Pleistocene and in the Holocene, lateral channel migrations were the dominant process of riverine landscape changes and hence directly influenced human occupation of the valley. Therefore, to assess the physical settings of archaeological …
