A provenance study on indigenous and Phoenician bronzes
The diachronic evolution of the Early Iron Age copper-based metallurgy in southern Portugal is behind the research now carried out with the aim of determining the copper provenance in bronzes from two partially coeval settlements. Castro dos Ratinhos shows a metallurgy of Late Bronze Age indigenous tradition, while Quinta do Almaraz with a strong Phoenician influence, presents a more evolved technology, apparently affiliated with regions borderin…

Compositional and microstructural outlook of grave goods from Anta do Malhão and Soalheironas (Portugal)
Microanalytical study of copper ores from the Chalcolithic settlement of São Pedro (Portugal)
Copper ores recovered at the third millennium bce settlement of São Pedro, Portugal, were characterized by micro‐Raman spectroscopy, micro‐energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometry (micro‐ EDXRF) and micro‐particle‐induced X‐ray emission spectrometry (micro‐PIXE). The collection shows the common presence of secondary copper minerals (malachite, pseudomalachite and libethenite) combined with iron oxyhydroxides (hematite and goethite), while arsenic‐ric…
The Composition of the São Brás Copper Hoard in Relation to the Bell Beaker Metallurgy in the South‐western Iberian Peninsula
A large ceramic vessel was discovered at São Brás (southern Portugal) containing a metallic hoard from the Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age period. These weapons and tools were characterized by microanalytical techniques as being composed of copper with varying arsenic contents (2.2 ± 1.6 wt%) and minor amounts of lead, bismuth and iron. The collection shows a clear association between daggers and copper with a higher arsenic content, which can be e…
European Silver Sources from the 15th to the 17th Century
The circulation trading routes and the characterization of the silver metal used in the European continent in the 15–17th centuries are historical issues that are still open. This study aimed to bring an insight into the silver processed within a chronological framework in the Portuguese territory, relating the analytical data with the known historical information. This investigation developed on 230 high silver coins from two important Portugues…
Early Imports in the Late Bronze Age of South‐Western Iberia
The composition and manufacture of Late Bronze Age metallic artefacts from funerary and domestic contexts of southern inland Portugal was studied. The prevailing trend comprises binary bronzes (10.3 ± 2.1 wt% Sn) showing deformed equiaxial grains, annealing twins and slip bands. The alloy composition is somewhat independent of artefact type, while the manufacture seems to rely on artefact function and the skilfulness of the metallurgist. The tech…
Provenance evidence for Roman lead artefacts of distinct chronology from Portuguese archaeological sites
Middle Bronze Age Arsenical Copper Alloys in Southern Portugal
In the Iberian Peninsula, the copper metallurgy from the Chalcolithic to the Middle Bronze Age (MBA) was mostly characterized by low arsenic contents. A collection of 53 MBA artefacts from southern Portugal was analysed by micro-EDXRF, optical microscopy, SEM–EDS and Vickers to investigate the metal composition and manufacture. No technological distinction was found between artefacts from domestic and funerary contexts, which were radiocarbon-dat…
A Compositional and Microstructural Study of Eighth‐Century BC Bronzes from Moita Da Ladra (Tagus Estuary)
Metals from a votive deposit at Moita da Ladra (Tagus Estuary) dating to the eighth century bc were studied by micro‐EDXRF, optical microscopy and Vickers testing to investigate the adoption of Phoenician innovations by indigenous communities. Artefacts are made of bronze alloys with suitable tin contents (11.6 ± 2.3 wt%) and very low iron impurities ( bc
Marsh benthic Foraminifera response to estuarine hydrological balance driven by climate variability over the last 2000 yr (Minho estuary, NW Portugal)
A high-resolution study of a marsh sedimentary sequence from the Minho estuary provides a new palaeoenvironmental reconstruction from NW Iberian based on geological proxies supported by historical and instrumental climatic records. A low-salinity tidal flat, dominated by Trochamminita salsa , Haplophragmoides spp. and Cribrostomoides spp., prevailed from AD 140–1360 (Roman Warm Period, Dark Ages, Medieval Climatic Anomaly). This sheltered environ…
