Masculinity–femininity Predicts Sexual Orientation in Men but Not in Women
Using the nationally representative sample of about 15,000 Add Health respondents in Wave III, the hypothesis is tested that masculinity–femininity in adolescence is correlated with sexual orientation 5 years later and 6 years later: that is, that for adolescent males in 1995 and again in 1996, more feminine males have a higher probability of self-identifying as homosexuals in 2001–02. It is predicted that for adolescent females in 1995 and 1996,…
Longitudinal Trends in Race/Ethnic Disparities in Leading Health Indicators From Adolescence to Young Adulthood
OBJECTIVE: To use ethnically diverse, national data to examine longitudinal trends in race/ethnic disparities in 20 leading health indicators from Healthy People 2010 across multiple domains from adolescence to young adulthood. Much of what is known about health disparities is based on cross-sectional measures collected at a single time point. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Nationally representative data for more than 14 000 adolescents enrol…
Prevalence of HIV Infection Among Young Adults in the United States
Objectives. We estimated HIV prevalence rates among young adults in the United States. Methods. We used survey data from the third wave of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a random sample of nearly 19000 young adults initiated in 1994–1995. Consenting respondents were screened for the presence of antibodies to HIV-1 in oral mucosal transudate specimens. We calculated prevalence rates, accounting for survey design, response ra…
Risk Factors Differ According to Same-Sex and Opposite-Sex Interest
Are risk behaviours in adolescence differentiated according to same-sex vs opposite-sex interest? For all respondents a five-point scale of interest in each sex used information from both of the first two in-home waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Logistic regression predicted the probability of experiencing each risk behaviour from the same-sex and opposite-sex interest scores. Same-sex interests have mor…
Body Mass Index, Dieting, Romance, and Sexual Activity in Adolescent Girls
Romantic relationships constitute an important, but understudied, developmental context for accommodation to pubertal change. Using a nationally representative sample of 5,487 black, white, and Hispanic adolescent females, this study examined associations among body mass index, current romantic involvement, and dieting. For each one point increase in body mass‐index (BMI), the probability of having a romantic relationship decreased by 6%. Further…
Health and Behavior Risks of Adolescents with Mixed-Race Identity
Adolescents who self-identify as more than 1 race are at higher health and behavior risks. The findings are compatible with interpreting the elevated risk of mixed race as associated with stress

The New Know-Nothings
Adolescent males' willingness to report masturbation
This paper compares contemporaneous and retrospective reports of adolescent masturbation experience, partnered sexual behavior, and nonsexual problem behavior. Analyses are based on data from 59 White males who were followed for 3 years in early adolescence and later reinterviewed as young adults. Comparisons of adolescent and adult reports about adolescent behavior indicated that adolescent masturbation, but not coitus and wet dreams, was more l…
Biological Limits of Gender Construction
A biosocial theory of gender is constructed on both the macro and micro levels. A micro-model of within-sex differences among females integrates the biological model current in primatology with the prevailing social science model. It shows how sex differences in hormone experience from gestation to adulthood shape gendered behavior (that is, behavior that differs by sex). On the macro level, this model also illustrates how socialization and envir…
You Don't Bring Me Anything but Down
What accounts for the sex difference in depression that emerges during the period of adolescence? We propose that females become more depressed than males in adolescence partly as a consequence of their involvement in romantic relationships. Using two waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 8,181), a study which began interviewing respondents in 1994, we compare change in levels of depression for adolescents w…
Prenatal effects of maternal smoking on daughters' smoking
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to specify the effect of prenatal fetal exposure to maternal cotinine and testosterone on daughters' smoking in adolescence and adulthood. METHODS: Longitudinal causal models were estimated among 240 White mother-daughter pairs from the Child Health and Development Study. Mothers and daughters were reinterviewed when daughters were aged 15 to 17 years, and daughters were interviewed at 27 to 30 years of a…
Effects of body fat on weight concerns, dating, and sexual activity
Using data from a 2-year longitudinal study of 200 Black and White adolescent girls (mean age was 13.8 years at study entry), the authors investigated the implications of differences in body fat for dating and sexual activity and the implications of heterosexual activity for dieting and weight concerns. Among White girls, and Black girls with college-educated mothers, more body fat was associated with a lower probability of dating, even among non…

Testosterone Predicts Initiation of Coitus in Adolescent Females
OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to demonstrate, using longitudinal data, that the pubertal rise in testosterone (T) is associated with subsequent increases in female sexual interest and activity, and to examine these relationships within the context of a social control variable. METHODS: Using data from a 2-year panel study of approximately 200 black and white postmenarcheal adolescent females, the relationships among semiannual measur…
Biosocial Models of Low-Fertility Societies
THIS ARTICLE SUGGESTS how theoretical biosocial models may give insight into fertility-related processes in modern, permissive societies. I do not allow the absence of data to constrain my thoughts. Biosocial models explain behavior by jointly considering sociological or psychological determinants and biological determinants. The jointness of the model may involve additive, interactive, or indirect effects of biological and sociological character…
Stress and age at menarche of mothers and daughters
The hypothesis that psychological stress during early childhood leads to advanced reproductive maturation was assessed using data from the California Childhood Health and Development Study. Regression analyses failed to indicate that bed wetting, nightmares or thumb-sucking at age 5 predict age at menarche, regardless of controls for mother's age at menarche. Among socioeconomic variables suggested as contextual stressors measured at age 9–11 onl…
Androgen effects on women's gendered behaviour
Test of the applicability of the hormonal theory of sex-dimorphic behaviour to adult women is achieved in this study by assembling measures of prenatal and adult androgen exposure, and a broad measure of gendered behaviour on a sample of white women aged 27–30. Androgen exposure in the second (and no other) trimester of fetal life, combined with and in interaction with adult androgens, masculinises women's behaviour and explains a substantial pro…

Initiation of Coitus in Early Adolescence
It is assumed that in the case of 2 adolescents with similar social constraints the individual with higher motivation is more likely to begin sexual behavior. The models also include another dimension i.e. to have coitus one needs a partner. The partner is not usually a victim in this deviant but a willing participant and it is necessary to consider the ability to attract a partner in the model. Conceptualizing adolescent coitus as the failure of…
Biological Predispositions and Social Control in Adolescent Sexual Behavior
This paper develops biosocial models of adolescent sexuality that combine traditional sociological models with models derived from a biological theory of hormone effects. Data are presented from a representative sample of 102 males and 99 females, drawn from grades 8, 9, and 10 in public schools in a southern U.S. city, and ranging in age from 13 to 16 years old. Although the sociological models alone look quite satisfactory, the combined models …

Parental Marital Status Effects on Adolescent Sexual Behavior
Data from a panel study of virgin adolescents first interviewed in junior high school confirm previous findings by others that parental marital status and its changes are related to initiation of coitus by young adolescents. 1405 out of an eligible 1923 adolescents in 4 junior high schools (73%) were interviewed and filled out a confidential questionnaire in their own homes. 2 years later in 1982 82% of the the original interviewees were reinterv…

A Cross-Cultural Examination of the Relationship Between Ages at Menarche, Marriage, and First Birth
Recent work with samples of black and white urban American women showed a clear behavioral sequence relating age at menarche to age at first intercourse to age at first birth. This paper shows that the linking of ages at menarche, intercourse, marriage, and first birth is a pattern which occurs in very diverse cultures. We present confirmatory data from the United States, Belgium, and Pakistan, and from Malay and Chinese women in Malaysia. We int…
Biosocial foundations for adolescent female sexuality
Despite the widespread assumption that hormones stimulate motivation for sexual behavior in adolescence, no published empirical studies have demonstrated this link. In a cross-sectional study of 78 females in the eighth, ninth, and tenth grades in public schools, we show that hormones have effects on sexual motivation and behavior. Comparison with previous results from a parallel sample of males indicates that for both sexes these effects are pri…
Patterns of Adolescent Friendship and Effects on Sexual Behavior
The study investigates homogeneity bias and its sources between adolescent same sex friends by whether or not adolescents have had sexual intercourse using 2 rounds of panel data from a junior high school system in urban Florida. Data were analysed by race sex subgroups. White females and white males tend to name same sex friends whose sexual intercourse behavior is like their own. Sexual intercourse is not a significant factor in accounting for …
Marital Alternatives and Marital Disruption
Using longitudinal data from a panel of married, white, urban couples from 16 United States urban areas, this paper explores the usefulness of as a dimension in explaining marital stability. A scale is employed to measure the respondents'perception of how much better or worse off they would be without their present spouse, and how easily that spouse could be replaced with one of comparable quality. Even when taken independently, the dimension of …
Do couples make fertility plans one birth at a time
Criteria are specified for distinguishing one-decision from sequential-decision models of fertility. Sequential decisions are not demonstrated by parity-specific differences in fertility determinants. Sequential models must demonstrate the importance of unanticipated intervening events in changing fertility plans or fertility experience. They must demonstrate that the intervening events are not caused by the fertility. Two empirical tests are des…
Skin Color, Status, and Mate Selection
Data from a sample of 350 Negro married couples in Washington, D. C., are analyzed to examine the changing relationship between status attributes, mate selection, and skin color, by comparison of duration-of-marriage cohorts. We find that the traditional status advantage of light-skinned women holds for all cohorts, with little indication of change. For men, on the other hand, darker-skinned men experienced better status and mate-selection opport…
The Nature of Gender
I explain a biosocial model of women’s gendered behavior (behavior on which the sexes differ). This model integrates a macro sociological theory with a biological theory derived from primate behavior. The sociological model is designed to explain changes in the relationship between sex and behavior over time or between groups. The biological model is designed to explain individual within-sex variance and between-sex variance in gendered behavior …
Parity-Specific and Two-Sex Utility Models of Reproductive Intentions
This paper uses married couples’ anticipated consequences of having a (another) child to predict their reproductive intentions. Parity-specific models identify different variables as predictors of reproductive behavior at different parities but do not yield interpretable patterns of difference by parity. Parity-specific models are not significantly stronger predictors of reproductive behavior. Generally, wife-only models are distinctly superior t…
Mother's Influence on the Sexual Behavior of Their Teenage Children
Multivariate techniques are used to examine the influence of mothers sexual experiences as teenagers on their teenage childrens current sexual behaviors. Little of the demonstrated relationship is transmitted through differential attitudes or communication patterns of mothers with differing early sexual experience. For girls there is a reason to believe that the correlation between the mothers early behavior and the daughters current behavior is …

Coital and non-coital sexual behaviors of white and black adolescents
As part of a longitudinal study of young adolescents, data were collected in 1980 on the non-coital and coital sexual experiences of male and female adolescents who ranged in age from 12 to 15 at the time of the initial contact. The follow-up data were collected two years later. Both a Guttman-scale analysis and a longitudinal analysis of these data indicate different sexual patterns between White and Black teens; Whites are more likely than Blac…
Body Mass Index, Dieting, Romance, and Sexual Activity in Adolescent Girls

Adolescents' Honesty in a Survey of Sexual Behavior
Adolescents' reports of whether they told the truth about having had intercourse when answering a two years prior survey of sexual behavior are used to examine the correlates of such behavior. Seven percent of the young people say they did not tell the truth at Time 1. Another substan tial proportion seem to be unclear about what they said, and, perhaps, about the timing of their first intercourse. Implications of these findings for survey resear…

Wives’ and husbands’ expected costs and benefits of childbearing as predictors of pregnancy
This paper examines the usefulness of 1-sex and 2-sex utility models of reproductive behavior in predicting births as consequences of wives' and husbands' perceptions of the costs and benefits of another child. We used longitudinal data on a sample of 280 white and 69 black young urban American couples. For whites, the female models proved more useful than the male models. 2-sex models generally predict more variance than do female models. It was…

The Influence of the Ideal Mate Image on Mate Selection and Mate Perception
This study attempted to determine whether ideal mate images actually influence mate selection. The Social Context of Marriage
A Method for Validation of Reported Sexual Data
IN THE past 30 years, it has become commonplace to collect interview and questionnaire data about the personal sexual behavior of respondents, and most researchers have come to take it for granted that if the questions are asked in a reasonable and non-threatening way, they will be answered. The problem which continues to nag is the matter of validity of the response. Did the respondent actually do what he said he did? In methodological discussio…
Personality Match and Interpersonal Perception as Predictors of Marriage
One hundred fifty engaged couples were administered personality tests and mate perception tests and then were followed up over a period of five years to determine whether they married or broke the engagement. Using discriminant function analysis, the investigator measured the contributions of individual personality, personality match, and mate perception to discriminating those who married from those who broke up. No contribution was found for in…

The Social Context of Marriage
Sex and Family Life
Sex plays a fundamentally different role in the lives of women than it does in the lives of men. A partial explanation of this may be that men are sexually more condi tionable by their environment. Men and women also attach different meanings to sex. Not only is sex a more important determinant in a man's decision to marry, but also it is a more important factor in his evaluation of his marriage. Sexual behavior and sexual values are derivative f…

Frequency of intercourse by day of the week∗
There seems to be a casual consensus among scholars and laymen that the probability of coitus occurring on Saturday and Sunday is higher than the probability for other days in the week. Although we have not been able to locate a single piece of published data to this effect, we have been told by colleagues who have informally examined coital calendars collected in infertility clinics that weekends are big on these calendars. The usual explanation…
