Mental health stigma and health-seeking behaviors amongst pregnant women in Vietnam
Addressing mental health-related stigma could influence the decision of disclosure and health-seeking behaviors, which could in turn improve responsiveness of the local health system to the needs of pregnant women with mental health needs, by offering prompt attention, a wide range of choices, and improved communication. Potential interventions to decrease stigma and improve access to mental healthcare for pregnant women in Vietnam should target …
Understanding the barriers to integrating maternal and mental health at primary health care in Vietnam
The prevalence of common perinatal mental disorders in Vietnam ranges from 16.9% to 39.9%, and substantial treatment gaps have been identified at all levels. This paper explores constraints to the integration of maternal and mental health services at the primary healthcare level and the implications for the health system’s responsiveness to the needs and expectations of pregnant women with mental health conditions in Vietnam. As part of the RESPO…

Further interventions are required to establish the reputation of Vietnamese healthcare facilities as smoke-free environments
We can't expect much”
Responsiveness centres on understanding peoples' ‘legitimate’ expectations of their health system. • Healthcare-related expectations are shaped at the intersection of social, temporal, and spatial ‘locations’. • Expectations are also shaped by social norms, and market-driven practices and forces in the health system. • There is a need for health system actors to consider the impact of market forces on responsive care provision. • Active citizen p…
Intention to Exclusively Breastfeed Is Associated with Lower Rates of Cesarean Section for Nonmedical Reasons in a Cohort of Mothers in Vietnam
This study adds to the growing evidence related to unnecessary cesarean sections and routine over-medicalization of normal birth in the urban areas of Vietnam. The association between breastfeeding intentions and a lower rate of cesarean section suggests that education on breastfeeding could be a useful intervention for reducing the rate of cesarean sections and improving maternal and child health
Health financial hardship among ethnic minority populations in Vietnam
This study was conducted to report the prevalence of financial hardship and identify associated factors among ethnic minority populations in Vietnam. In 2019, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 5,033 ethnic minority participants from 12 provinces located in four socioeconomic regions in Vietnam. Financial hardship was measured by asking the study respondents if they had to borrow money, sell household assets, or stop using health care servic…

Improving Breastfeeding by Empowering Mothers in Vietnam
Breastfeeding provides benefits to the infant and mother; however, the rates of breastfeeding, particularly exclusive breastfeeding, remain below optimal levels in many Asian countries. The aim of this study is to review the benefits of breastfeeding to mothers and infants and current rates of breastfeeding in Vietnam, and to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile application on exclusive breastfeeding among mothers in Vietnam. A two-arm, paralle…

Amniocentesis test uptake for congenital defects
Our study aimed to identify the knowledge, attitude, and factors associated with uptake of amniocentesis test amongst pregnant women of advanced maternal age (35+ years old). A cross-sectional survey was performed on 481 participants in 2016. Women with higher educational attainment, higher income level, having a baby with congenital defects, and women with better knowledge and/or attitude about amniocentesis test were more likely to accept the t…

Response process and test–retest reliability of the Context Assessment for Community Health tool in Vietnam
BACKGROUND: The recently developed Context Assessment for Community Health (COACH) tool aims to measure aspects of the local healthcare context perceived to influence knowledge translation in low- and middle-income countries. The tool measures eight dimensions (organizational resources, community engagement, monitoring services for action, sources of knowledge, commitment to work, work culture, leadership, and informal payment) through 49 items. …
Coherence between health policy and human resource strategy
The failure to meet health goals such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) is partly due to the lack of appropriate resources for the effective implementation of health policies. The lack of coherence between the health policies and human resource (HR) strategy is one of the major causes. This article explores the relationship and the degree of coherence between health policy--in this case maternal health policy--processes and HR strategy in…
Policy processes underpinning universal health insurance in Vietnam
BACKGROUND: In almost 30 years since economic reforms or 'renovation' (Doimoi) were launched, Vietnam has achieved remarkably good health results, in many cases matching those in much higher income countries. This study explores the contribution made by Universal Health Insurance (UHI) policies, focusing on the past 15 years. We conducted a mixed method study to describe and assess the policy process relating to health insurance, from agenda sett…

Evidence used mostly covered easily quantifiable issues and clearly identifiable technical solutions. Different policy actors were involved; actors’ evidence preferences were affected by their power, agendas, values and per…
