Song and dance style--viewed as nonverbal communications about culture--are here related to social structure and cultural history. Patterns of performance, theme, text and movement are analyzed in large samples of films an recordings from the whole range of human culture, according to the methods explained in this volume. This paper reports the results of a reanalysis, using multivariate tech niques, of song-style data reported by Alan Lomax and his associates over the past decade. Growth Functions and Culture History
Using two kinds of asymptotic growth functions, the logistic and the Gompertz curves, the author argues that growth in the absolute numbers of Classic Maya temple centers in the lowlands was probably a process with built-in self-limitations.
