The Association Between Intensive Parenting Attitudes and Topical Fluoride Opposition
Intensive parenting attitudes were significantly and positively associated with topical fluoride opposition. Clinicians can utilize these findings to assess caregivers' intensive parenting attitudes, learn about concerns, and address them by tailoring communication strategies to discuss appropriate risk-based recommendations about topical fluoride
Demonstrating the Reliability and Structural Validity of Creating Patient-Level and Clinician-Level Scores on the Person Centered Primary Care Measure
BACKGROUND: The Person Centered Primary Care Measure (PCPCM) was developed to assess "aspects that contribute to patient perceptions regarding the integrating, prioritizing, and personalizing functions of primary care." Several psychometric issues remain unresolved. OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the performance of the existing patient-level model, evaluate measurement bias, assess the impact of item-level missingness on reliability, examine th…

OBJECTIVE: This paper evaluates the reliability and validity of the Consumer Assessments of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) CC item set. RESEARCH DESIGN: Using 2008 survey data, we assessed the internal consistency of the CAHPS CC scales using the Cronbach α's and examined the validity of the measures using exploratory …
Evaluating Measurement Equivalence Across Race and Ethnicity on the CAHPS Cultural Competence Survey
BACKGROUND: The Consumer Assessments of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Cultural Competence Survey assesses patients' experiences with culturally competent care. This study evaluates the equivalence of responses to this survey across different racial and ethnic subgroups. In this study, we examined whether measurement bias on the CAHPS Cultural Competence Survey impedes valid measurement across white, black, and Hispanic patients. METHOD…
Does the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Cultural Competence Survey Provide Equivalent Measurement Across English and Spanish Versions
BACKGROUND: The English and Spanish versions of the Consumer Assessments of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Cultural Competence Survey (CAHPS-CC) assess patients' experiences with culturally competent care. The possibility exists that even when Spanish and English speakers experience the same levels of culturally competent care, responses describing their care may differ. This is called measurement bias. To deliver reliable and valid inf…

The Relation of Personality to Alcohol Abuse/Dependence in a High‐Risk Sample
The current study had two goals. The first goal was to test the mediational role of young adult personality in the relation between parental alcoholism and young adult alcoholism. The second was to examine the associations between personality and alcohol use motives and reasons to limit drinking in order to explore possible mechanisms by which personality may influence alcohol abuse/dependence. Multilevel modeling techniques were used to analyze …
Neighbor's Knowledge and Reaction to Suspected Child Abuse in an Urban Setting
Neighbors are seen as an important source of child abuse prevention and reporting. This article reports the result of a random telephone survey of a large mid-western city (n = 513) which examined the extent to which respondents suspected their neighbors of physical child abuse. Data was also collected on how respondents learned of such physical abuse, what their response to it was, and whether they noticed a difference in the frequency of the ab…
Measurement Bias Across Gender on the Children's Depression Inventory
Confirmatory factor analysis for ordered-categorical measures (CFA-OCM) and rating scale item response theory (IRT) analyses explore measurement bias across gender on the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) in a community sample of 779 children in the third and sixth grades. Given the set of statistical criteria, IRT and CFA-OCM generally establish measurement equivalence. Results substantiate both Craighead et al.'s five-factor model and IRT m…
Internal and External Validity of Scores on the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding and the Paulhus Deception Scales
The internal and external validity of scores on the two-scale Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR) and its recent revision, the Paulhus Deception Scales (PDS), developed to measure two facets of social desirability, were studied with three groups of forensic clients and two groups of college undergraduates (total N = 519). The two scales were statistically significantly related in all groups and for both versions of the inventory. A …

Fitting multilevel models in complex survey data with design weights
BACKGROUND: Multilevel models (MLM) offer complex survey data analysts a unique approach to understanding individual and contextual determinants of public health. However, little summarized guidance exists with regard to fitting MLM in complex survey data with design weights. Simulation work suggests that analysts should scale design weights using two methods and fit the MLM using unweighted and scaled-weighted data. This article examines the per…

Assessing the adequacy of self-reported alcohol abuse measurement across time and ethnicity
1992's item-level findings suggest that estimates of drinking related social or legal problems may underestimate these specific problems among Hispanics. However, impact analyses indicated no appreciable effect on alcohol abuse estimates resulting from the item-set. Efforts to monitor change in alcohol abuse diagnoses among the Hispanic community can use 1992 estimates as a valid baseline. In 2001-2002, item-level measurement bias on seven items …

METHODS: We performed confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistenc…
Validly Interpreting Patients’ Reports
INTRODUCTION: Validly interpreting scores based on patients' reports of their experiences using scales depends on a valid scoring system. The possibility exists that, although the creators of a scale intended to create a scale measuring a single construct, the questions may seem to measure more than one construct. However, the possibility also exists that the questions do generally measure one construct, but several "nuisance" constructs influenc…
