  • National Institutions and Self-Insurance

Raphaël Godefroy, Joshua Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2025•References: 52

We here study the relationship between national institutions and farming practices in Africa. The analysis exploits detailed geospatial data to compare outcomes across nearby plots exposed to the same underlying agroclimatic risk but belonging to adjacent countries that have different national institutions. We document systematic cross-border differences in rural economic activity. In countries that have worse national institutions, farmers grew …

  • What explains the socioeconomic status-health gradient? Evidence from workplace Covid-19 infections

Open Access•Raphaël Godefroy, Joshua Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

This paper studies the contribution of the workplace to the SES-health gradient. Our analysis is based on a unique dataset that tracks various health outcomes and workplace risks among healthcare workers during the first four months of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The setting provides an exceptional opportunity to test for work-related disparities in health, while controlling for confounding determinants of the SES-health gradient. W…

  • Estimates of Covid-19 Cases across Four Canadian Provinces

David Benatia, Raphaël Godefroy et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2020

This article estimates population infection rates from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) across four Canadian provinces from late March to early May 2020. The analysis combines daily data on the number of conducted tests and diagnosed cases with a methodology that corrects for non-random testing. We estimate the relationship between daily changes in the number of conducted tests and the fraction of positive cases in the non-random sample (typic…

  • How Women's Rights Affect Fertility

    Open Access•Raphaël Godefroy•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 38

This article estimates the impact on fertility of a 1999 reform that reduced litigants’ rights for Muslim women in certain states of Nigeria. Using data from Demographic and Health Surveys, I find that, where enforced, the Reform increased the yearly probability of giving birth by 0.026. This effect stems from both a shift of fertility decisions within marriage towards husbands’ preferences and an increase in the probability of being married. The…

  • Voter turnout and fiscal policy

    Open Access•Raphaël Godefroy, Emeric Henry•ARTICLE•European Economic Review•2016
