Dual nicotine and cannabis use among Asian American and Pacific Island adults
Background There are documented health disparities concerning Asian American and Pacific Island (AAPI) adults who smoke combustible tobacco, yet little work has identified factors related to worse smoking outcomes among these individuals. This is the first study to test whether cannabis use among AAPI adults who smoke tobacco is related to more severe cigarette dependence, and whether negative affect and negative reinforcement expectancies play a…
Racism and Cannabis-Related Problems Among Hispanic/Latine Adults
Method: We examined the role of negative emotions resulting from racism on cannabis-related problems among 520 (44.2% female) Hispanic/Latine adults aged 18-65 (M = 36.6, SD = 10.3) who endorsed past-month cannabis use. Results: Consistent with minority stress-based models, frequency of experiencing racism was statistically significantly correlated with racism-related negative affect, coping-motivated cannabis use, cannabis-related problems, anxi…
Unmet Health-Related Social Needs Among Black Adults Who Smoke
Physical health among Hispanic adults
The Hispanic population in the United States (US) is an established tobacco and physical health disparities population. However, there has been limited study of this group in terms of type of nicotine product use and health status. The current investigation builds from limited past work to explore differences in physical health status, somatic symptom severity, and medical conditions between Hispanic adults who exclusively use combustible cigaret…
Latent profiles of processes in acceptance and commitment therapy and their associations with eating disorder symptoms among adult women
Dual Electronic and Combustible Cigarette Use
Background: E-cigarette use is on the rise and many who use e-cigarettes also smoke combustible cigarettes. Dual use (i.e., use of both electronic and combustible cigarettes) is associated with greater rates of cannabis use and cannabis use among individuals who engage in dual use is related to more severe ecigarette-related problems. Yet, no known studies have tested whether cannabis use is related to more severe e-cigarette problems via negativ…
Neighborhood Vigilance in Terms of Abstinence Expectancies for Smoking and Severity of Problems When Quitting
Background: Although social determinants of health (SDoH) have increasingly been understood as clinically important factors in the onset, maintenance, and relapse of substance use behavior, little research has evaluated neighborhood vigilance in terms of smoking. Objectives: The present investigation sought to evaluate the role of neighborhood vigilance in terms of smoking abstinence expectancies (i.e., perceived consequences of refraining from s…
Combustible cigarette smokers versus dual combustible and electronic users
Research on dual combustible and electronic nicotine use among Latinx persons is needed to better understand patterns of use because this group is an established tobacco disparities population. Negative emotional symptoms and related processes (e.g., reactive transdiagnostic vulnerabilities) have been among the most prominent factors linked to the onset, maintenance, and relapse of smoking. As such, the current study sought to compare levels of m…
Perceived Racial/Ethnic Discrimination and Smoking Outcome Expectancies among Adult Latinx Smokers Living in the United States
Background: Smoking-related health disparities are prevalent in the Latinx community in the United States (US). Although Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) are known to contribute to a myriad of health problems among the Latinx population, there is relatively limited work expressly aimed at elucidating SDoH among Latinx smokers. Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination is one SDoH construct that may be especially relevant to understanding smoking…
Anxiety Sensitivity Among Non-Hispanic Black Adults
Centering Equity in the Nation's Weather, Water, and Climate Services
Water, weather, and climate affect everyone. However, their impacts on various communities can be very different based on who has access to essential services and environmental knowledge. Structural discrimination, including racism and other forms of privileging and exclusion, affects people's lives and health, with ripples across all sectors of society. In the United States, the need to equitably provide weather, water, and climate services is u…
Latinx Individuals Who Smoke Daily with and without a Probable Anxiety Disorder
There is a well-established relation between anxiety psychopathology and smoking in the general population. However, little work focuses on Latinx/Hispanic (hereafter Latinx) persons who smoke from this comorbidity perspective. The present investigation aimed to explore differences among English-speaking Latinx adults who live in the United States (US) and smoke cigarettes with and without a probable anxiety disorder in terms of cigarette depende…
Anxiety symptoms and anxiety sensitivity in relation to cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for smoking cessation and quit problems among adult Latinx smokers
Cigarette smoking is associated with adverse physical and mental health among Latinx adults in the United States. The present investigation sought to explore the main and interactive effects of anxiety symptoms and anxiety sensitivity in relation to cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for smoking cessation, and severity of problems experienced when quitting among adult Latinx smokers. Participants included 338 Latinx adult daily cigarette sm…
Differences in smoking behavior and beliefs about abstinence among Latinx individuals with and without depression who smoke cigarettes
There is a well-established relation between depression and smoking in the general population. However, past work focused on Latinx persons who smoke in relation to depressed affect has yielded inconsistent findings. The present investigation aimed to build on past research and evaluate differences among English-speaking Latinx adults who smoke combustible cigarettes with and without probable depression in terms of cigarette dependence, perceived…
Differences in Pain Severity and Interference between Latinx Combustible Cigarette Smokers and Dual Users with Current Pain
Latinx individuals who smoke represent a tobacco health disparities group. Yet, limited research has focused on examining dual combustible and electronic cigarette use among Latinx populations. Importantly, Latinx persons who smoke also evince elevated rates of pain problems and symptoms and prior research has consistently linked pain problems and severity to smoking prevalence, maintenance, and behavior. Accordingly, the current study sought to …
Heart-Focused Anxiety Among Trauma-Exposed Latinx Young Adults
Rates of traumatic event exposure, posttraumatic stress (PTS), and co-occurring mental health symptoms and disorders are conditionally higher among Latinx individuals compared to other racial/ethnic populations. Importantly, Latinx persons are a heterogeneous population, and certain subgroups endorse higher rates of negative mental health outcomes than others, including Latinx young adults born in the USA. Yet, there is little understanding of in…
Perceived Discrimination, Experiential Avoidance, and Mental Health among Hispanic Adults in Primary Care
The Hispanic population is the largest minority group in the United States and frequently experiences racial discrimination and mental health difficulties. Prior work suggests that perceived racial discrimination is a significant risk factor for poorer mental health among Hispanic in the United States. However, little work has investigated how perceived racial discrimination relates to anxiety and depression among Hispanic adults. Thus, the curre…
Racial Discrimination and Hazardous Drinking among Black Drinkers
Objective: Black Americans who consume alcohol experience worse alcohol-related outcomes. Thus, identifying psycho-sociocultural factors that play a role in hazardous drinking among Black individuals is vital to informing prevention and treatment efforts to reduce these disparities. Racial discrimination is related to hazardous drinking among Black adults, suggesting that some may drink (and continue to drink despite drinking-related problems) to…
Anxiety sensitivity and acculturative stress
The Latinx population suffers from mental health inequalities. Although past work has implicated acculturative stress and anxiety sensitivity as important individual difference factors for anxiety and depression in this group, it is presently unclear how they work together to influence more severe anxiety and depressive symptom expression among Latinx. To help address this gap in the existing literature, the current study evaluated the role of co…
Acculturative Stress, Anxiety Sensitivity, and Smoking among Spanish-Speaking Latinx Adult Smokers
Objectives: Although acculturative stress is a known individual difference factor related to poor health, little is understood about its relationship to smoking among Latinx adults. One transdiagnostic factor that may serve a mediational role in the relation between acculturative stress and smoking is anxiety sensitivity. The current study evaluated whether anxiety sensitivity mediated the relations between acculturative stress and smoking among …
The synergetic effect of alcohol consumption and cigarettes per day on smoking outcomes expectancies among Latinx adult smokers
The present study investigated alcohol consumption and cigarettes per day in relation to smoking outcome expectancies among Spanish-speaking Latinx daily smokers ( N = 371). There was a significant interaction between alcohol consumption and number of cigarettes per day on positive smoking expectancies. Specifically, alcohol consumption has a stronger association with positive expectancies for smoking at lower rates of cigarettes per day. No such…
Anxiety symptoms and smoking outcome expectancies among Spanish-speaking Latinx adult smokers
Although anxiety symptoms/disorders are consistently implicated in smoking processes, no empirical work has identified individual difference factors that may underlie such relations among Latinx smokers. The current study examined anxiety sensitivity as an explanatory factor underlying the relationship between anxiety symptoms and smoking expectancies among Spanish-speaking Latinx smokers. Participants included 363 Spanish-speaking Latinx daily s…
Opioid Misuse among Smokers with Chronic Pain
Opioid misuse is a significant public health concern with substantial medical, social, and economic costs. Cross cutting the personal and societal effects of this current crisis, opioid misuse is associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes that impair function across numerous life domains. Importantly, opioid misuse disproportionately affects persons with chronic pain and individuals who smoke tobacco. Despite the higher risk for s…

Superstorm Sandy was an unprecedented meteorological event that devastated the Caribbean and the Northeastern Coast of the USA in October 2012. While many research efforts will focus on the atmospheric conditions that led to the creation and unusual track of the storm, this study evaluates the impact of Sandy on voter turnout in the 2012 US Presidential Election. The goals of this paper are to (1) determine if any alterations in voter turnout occ…
The Current Debate on the Linkage Between Global Warming and Hurricanes
Following Hurricane Katrina and the parade of storms that affected the conterminous United States in 2004-2005, the apparent recent increase in intense hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin, and the reported increases in recent decades in some hurricane intensity and duration measures in several basins have received considerable attention. An important ongoing avenue of investigation in the climate and meteorology research communities is to de…
Climate Change and African Americans in the USA
Climate change is one of the most challenging geophysical science and policy issues in modern times. The combined anthropogenic and natural forcing on the climate has profound impacts on the major spheres of the Earth system. Scholarly analysis has also revealed a cascading array of effects on the socioeconomic and political fabric. One of the more subtle effects of climate change is how it may affect certain sub-groups of people. Herein, we draw…

Teaching and Learning Guide for
I Introduction Hurricanes are one of nature's most awe‐inspiring natural systems that are just one manifestation of the generic tropical cyclone; a nonfrontal synoptic scale low‐pressure system that occurs over tropical or subtropical waters, with organized convection (i.e. thunderstorm activity) and a distinct cyclonic surface wind circulation. These storms typically form some distance from the equator in environments with: (i) warm ocean surfac…
A seasonal-scale climatological analysis correlating spring tornadic activity with antecedent fall–winter drought in the southeastern United States
Using rain gauge and satellite-based rainfall climatologies and the NOAA Storm Prediction Center tornado database (1952–2007), this study found a statistically significant tendency for fall–winter drought conditions to be correlated with below-normal tornado days the following spring in north Georgia (i.e. 93% of the years) and other regions of the Southeast. Non-drought years had nearly twice as many tornado days in the study area as drought yea…

The urban heat island effect and city contiguity
Impact of urbanization on US surface climate
We combine Landsat and MODIS data in a land model to assess the impact of urbanization on US surface climate. For cities built within forests, daytime urban land surface temperature (LST) is much higher than that of vegetated lands. For example, in Washington DC and Atlanta, daytime mean temperature differences between impervious and vegetated lands reach 3.3 and 2.0 °C, respectively. Conversely, for cities built within arid lands, such as Phoeni…
