Examining Disparities in Current E-Cigarette Use among U.S. Adults before and after the WHO Declaration of the Covid-19 Pandemic in March 2020
This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of e-cigarette use before and after the COVID-19 pandemic declaration and to delineate disparities in use across subpopulations. Data were derived from the 2020 Health Information National Trends Survey ( N = 3865) to conduct weighted multivariable logistic regression and marginal analyses. The overall prevalence of current e-cigarette use increased from 4.79% to 8.63% after the COVID-19 pandemic declara…
Setting Patient-Centered Priorities for Cardiovascular Disease in Central Appalachia
The disproportionate burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and associated risk factors continues to exist in the Central Appalachian Region (CAR) of the United States. Previous studies to gather data about patient-centered care for CVD in the region were conducted through focus group discussions. There have not been any studies that used a collaborative framework where patients, providers, and community stakeholders were engaged as panelists. T…
You Help Us Tell our Story
Inuvialuit have always created culture through our/their living and land-based practices. For us, making culture means doing, practicing, and sharing activities and songs and country food, on the land and in town, together with our families and communities. These layers of history are embedded in the landscape of Inuvialuit Nunangat, our homeland, and in the voices of Elders past and present speaking about their knowledges and experiences. In thi…
Message and media
This article offers a commentary on the state of advertising and media research. It suggests that the continuing evolution of media continues to disrupt advertising research and practice. The article concludes that there are some general questions about the relationships between advertising and media that are common to both tradition and digital media and that many issues that are often framed as unique to digital media, are manifestations of mor…
Perceptions of risk for Covid-19 among individuals with chronic diseases and stakeholders in Central Appalachia
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is rapidly evolving and is a serious public health threat worldwide. Timely and effective control of the pandemic is highly dependent on preventive approaches. Perception of risk is a major determinant of health behavior. The current study explores the association between actual risk and perceived risk for one’s self, family/friends and friends, and community. A questionnaire was administered to partic…
Measuring the Role of Uniqueness and Consistency to Develop Effective Advertising
Prior research on creativity and the effectiveness of executional factors in advertising has focused on the impact of uniqueness and consistency in comparison to prior and competitive advertising. Relatively little is known about the specific impact of these variables and their relationship to each other, and few existing measures of consistency and uniqueness extend beyond subjective rating scales. In this research, we develop new measures of ad…

Threats to Hope
Three studies find that when individuals become less confident that what they yearn for is possible (i.e., when hope is threatened) they engage in motivated reasoning related to products that purport to enable goal attainment. Specifically, they (a) selectively search for information from a product-favorable information source, (b) regard this information as more credible, and (c) are less discriminating of low-credibility message arguments. They…

Internet Marketing, Business Models, and Public Policy
The authors examine the role of the Internet in marketing in the context of business models that are economically viable. This examination raises questions regarding the degree to which the Internet is genuinely different and whether it will be a boon to consumers and investors. Economic necessity associated with the need to obtain and maintain profit streams suggests that Internet markets will likely be more similar to than different from tradit…

The Effects of Comparative Advertising on Attention, Memory, and Purchase Intentions
There is discrepancy between practitioners' views of comparative advertising and null findings by academics. However, in most studies, subjects' attention to and memory of the comparative claims were inflated, which may have precluded effects on these variables and on purchase intentions. This study manipulated market share and type of comparative claim, used nonforced exposure, measured attention via a computerized magazine, and assessed memory …
Toward Understanding the Attraction Effect
The attraction effect refers to an inferior product's ability to increase the attractiveness of another alternative when the inferior product is added to a choice set. This article examines potential explanations for the attraction effect and its boundary conditions. The article reports several empirical investigations and suggests that the attraction effect may be moderated by such variables as stimulus meaningfulness and familiarity with the pr…

A Typology of Individual Search Strategies Among Purchasers of New Automobiles
Cluster analysis of questionnaire data was used to identify six distinctive external information search patterns among purchasers of new automobiles. Two of the shopper clusters had not been clearly specified in prior research—namely, an advisor-assisted shopper group and a highly self-reliant shopper group. An effort to cross-validate the typology using data obtained from automobile sales personnel was partially successful. It is hypothesized th…

Cluster Analysis in Marketing Research
Applications of cluster analysis to marketing problems are reviewed. Alternative methods of cluster analysis are presented and evaluated in terms of recent empirical work on their performance characteristics. A two-stage cluster analysis methodology is recommended: preliminary identification of clusters via Ward's minimum variance method or simple average linkage, followed by cluster refinement by an iterative partitioning procedure. Issues and p…
An Interaction Framework of Consumer Decision Making
Three streams of research on consumer decision processes—task characteristics, individual differences, and elemental behavioral response analysis—are integrated within the conceptual framework of an interactionist model of consumer decision making. Taxonomies of task and individual difference characteristics are presented. It is suggested that a complete model of the consumer choice process must explicitly consider three components: task, individ…
The Self-Sentiment
The self-sentiment as factorially defined by Cattell was examined with particular emphasis on its relationship to other integrative factors defined by Cattell. Literature is reviewed and data from 98 adults presented. The self-sentiment trait of the 16 PF only correlates .28 with the dynamic self-sentiment trait of the Motivation Analysis Test. The dynamic superego factor of the latter test correlated only .36 with the factor of superego strength…
An Item Factor Analysis of the Mooney Problem Check List
A large obverse factor analysis was carried out on item responses given to the Mooney Problem Check List by three groups of adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age: 173 emotionally disturbed, 134 delinquent, and 273 normal controls. Individual analyses were performed for each of the three groups on the High School form of the test, and for the emotionally disturbed and normal groups on the Junior High school form. One large general factor emer…

Factor Analysis of Zuckerman's Sensation-Seeking Scale
A principal components analysis of Sensation-seeking Scale IV ( n = 156 undergraduates) followed by a varimax rotation provided some support to the factorial validity of some of Zuckerman's subscales. It is suggested that the dimensions of sensation seeking were arbitrarily limited in earlier work on the problem

Effects of Sex and Ethnic Variables on the Profiles of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistics and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
An examination of the effects of sex and ethnic variables on the test profiles of the ITPA and WISC in 42 mentally retarded subjects, 42 normal children, and 41 children with diagnosed learning or language problems (aged 6 to 10 yr.) indicated that while such effects may attain statistical significance, the amount of variance accounted for by such was small. Such a finding calls into question the practical significance of such effects
