Overcoming the barriers
Voluntary organisations and volunteer action are new pheno-mena in post-Soviet Russia. Despite growing needs, cultural and socio-economic barriers preclude their massive development. Social Support Networks and Loneliness Among Elderly Jews in Russia and Ukraine
The collapse of the Soviet Union had devastating consequences for the lives of its population, especially for older adults, many of whom became impoverished and were left with no social support. Using data from a survey of 2,579 elderly Jews in two of the largest countries of the former Soviet Union, Russia and Ukraine, we examine variables that affect their feeling of loneliness. Manifestations of Emotional Distress among Ethiopian Immigrants in Israel
Manifestations of emotional distress among Ethiopian immigrants in Israel were studied through structured individual interviews with 23 Ethiopian and non-Ethiopian service providers to the Ethiopian immigrant community. The information gathered confirmed that Ethiopian immigrants tend to somatize their emotional problems through symptoms usually centered on the head, heart and stomach. Maternal and environmental characteristics as predictors of behavioral problems and cognitive competence in 505 Israeli kindergarten children were investigated. Events in closer temporal proximity to assessments of functioning appeared more predictive than those in early infancy.
