Archaeological investigations of ancient climate change have become an important focus for many researchers. A number of studies have focused on scientific techniques to identify the intricate details of the event, and the subsequent impact of these climatic changes on the ecological landscape. These more scientifically oriented studies have allowed the present authors to investigate a more subtle impact on the landscape: trade disruption during …
Weak Ties on Old Roads
This article argues that the landscape attributes of a network are an influential factor in the network’s formation and function. By this, we mean that the realities of terrain and environment affect both physical and social networks in ways that can be productively incorporated into network analyses. Using two case studies from the sites of Buweib and the Paneion of the Wadi Minayh in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, we illustrate how landscape perf…
Phenomenological Approaches to the Egyptian Desert
This contribution explores, in broad strokes, the ways that a creative dialogue between archaeological and anthropological methods can produce holistic, nuanced approaches to the study of archaeological landscapes. Specifically, the paper explores the productivity of these methods when applied to arid landscapes, which are traditionally viewed as “difficult” or hostile to human activity. The methods discussed here, when used in combination, are u…

Not Seeing Is Believing
Chalcolithic religious practice at the site of Çadır Höyük (central Anatolia) included the insertion of ritual deposits into the architectural fabric of the settlement, "consecrating" spaces or imbuing them with symbolic properties. These deposits are recognizable in the archaeological record by their consistent use of ritually-charged material, such as ochre, copper, human and animal bone, and certain kinds of ceramics. During the 800-year perio…
Early Lives
Çadır Höyük, located in the Yozgat Province of the north-central Anatolian plateau, was continuously occupied from the late sixth millennium BCE until at least the thirteenth century CE. This article focuses on the fourth millennium BCE during which the Uruk System in southern Mesopotamia emerged, flourished and then retracted, and the Kura-Araxes culture from Transcaucasia ventured into Anatolia and the Levant. A close investigation of the Çadır…
Stability and change at Çadır Höyük in central Anatolia
Scholars have recently investigated the efficacy of applying globalisation models to ancient cultures such as the fourth-millennium BC Mesopotamian Uruk system. Embedded within globalisation models is the ‘complex connectivity‘ that brings disparate regions together into a singular world. In the fourth millennium BC, the site of Çadır Höyük on the north-central Anatolian plateau experienced dramatic changes in its material culture and architectur…
Sanctifying the House
The intramural burial of small children is culturally widespread, seen from prehistory until modern times n many places around the world. The practice was especially common in the prehistoric eastern Mediterranean, with many examples found in in Egypt, the Levant, and Anatolia. Burial of individuals within the house suggests kinship connections with the dead, the connection of the physical home to the life of the family, and perhaps the belief th…
