  • A Field Study of Social Information Processing Mean Differences and Variance Differences

    Open Access•Mary D Zalesny, Richard V Farace•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 28

Previous tests of the effects of socially transmitted information have not provided strong support for a social information processing approach to the formation of work related attitudes and perceptions. This study proposes that the attention-focusing effects of social information should be evidenced by unequal response variance and not necessarily in the typically hypothesized between-group mean differences of previous investigations. Three sepa…

    Open Access•Eric M Eisenberg, Peter R Monge et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1984•Cited by: 6•References: 23

This field study compared the effects of three dimensions of supervisor-subordinate coorientation regarding two communication rules (initiation and termination) on satisfaction with supervision and performance evaluations. For supervisors accuracy and perceived agreement on rules had positive effects on performance ratings of subordinates, even after controlling for frequency of contact. For subordinates, only perceived agreement on rules had an …

    Open Access•L Edna Rogers, Richard V Farace•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1975•Cited by: 94•References: 13

Relational communication refers to the control or dominance aspects of message exchange in dyads, as distinct from an emphasis on the report or referential aspects of communication. In relational communication analysis, the focus is on messages as transactions, and the major theoretic concepts which emerge in this analysis are symmetry, transitory, and complementarity of control.
