  • Influences of seasonal prey availability and anthropogenic landscape on small-vertebrate based palaeoecological reconstructions

    Open Access•Josep Francesc Bisbal-Chinesta, Hugues-Alexandre Blain et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 75

Birds of prey and carnivorous mammals are among the primary accumulating agents of faunal remains, mainly isolated bones and teeth in the karst sediment sites. The microvertebrate remains from their feces and pellets tend to be usually dispersed in the sediment at El Mirador cave (Atapuerca, Spain). Although, twenty small accumulations have been recovered in the Chalcolithic (MIR5) and Bronze Age (MIR4) levels. These accumulations contain an extr…

  • Paleoecological context of Homo aff. erectus (ATE7-1) at Sima del Elefante (late Early Pleistocene, Atapuerca, Spain) inferred from the herpetofaunal assemblage

Open Access•Christian Sánchez-Bandera, Ana Fagoaga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025

The Sima del Elefante cave is one of the archaeopaleontological sites located in the karstic complex of Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain), which is a remarkable locality for documenting an extensive sequence of human evidence. Within the stratigraphic sequence of the Sima del Elefante site, Level TE7 has yielded one of the oldest human remains recovered to date in western Europe. A hominin mid-face has recently been discovered (specimen ATE7-1)…

  • Rodents as indicators of the climatic conditions during the Middle Pleistocene in the southwestern Mediterranean region

    Open Access•J M López-García, Ian M Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 58

Rodents are a very useful tool in reconstructing the environment of the past, especially owing to their rapid response to climate change, their small home range, and their restricted habitat requirements. They are a highly diverse group of mammals, which have high reproduction rates and as a result can evolve rapidly. The abundance of their microfossil remains in archaeological and paleontological sites permits robust statistical analyses to reco…

  • The role of birds in Late Pleistocene Eurosiberian-Mediterranean boundary reconstructions in Western Europe

    Open Access•Carmen Núñez-Lahuerta, Julia Galán et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Evidence of paleoecological changes and Mousterian occupations at the Galería de las Estatuas site, Sierra de Atapuerca, northern Iberian plateau, Spain

    Open Access•J L Arsuaga, Asier Gómez‐olivencia et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

Here we present a new site in the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain): Galería de las Estatuas (GE), which provides new information about Mousterian occupations in the Iberian Plateau. The GE was an ancient entrance to the cave system, which is currently closed and sealed by a stalagmitic crust, below which a detritic sedimentary sequence of more than 2 m is found. This has been divided into five litostratigraphic units with a rich assemblage of …

  • Postcranial morphology of the middle Pleistocene humans from Sima de los Huesos, Spain

    Open Access•J L Arsuaga, J M Carretero et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2015

Significance The middle Pleistocene Sima de los Huesos (SH) fossil collection provides the rare opportunity to thoroughly characterize the postcranial skeleton in a fossil population, comparable only to that obtained in the study of the Neandertal hypodigm and recent (and fossil) modern humans. The SH paleodeme can be characterized as relatively tall, wide, and muscular individuals, who are less encephalized than both Neandertals and modern human…
