  • Temporal Changes in Vertebral Morphology of the Free‐Ranging Rhesus Macaques From Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico

    Open Access•Catalina I Villamil, Jeziel J Negrón et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Biological…•2026

  • Heritability in the Rhesus Macaque ( Macaca mulatta ) Vertebral Column

    Open Access•Catalina I Villamil, Jeziel J Negrón et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2025

The vertebral column plays a central role in primate locomotion and positional behavior. Understanding its evolution, therefore, has the potential to clarify evolutionary processes that have occurred in the primate lineage as well as the specific behaviors of extinct primates. However, to understand primate vertebral anatomy, it is important to determine how much of this anatomy is heritable and how much develops as a response to environmental fa…

  • Conserved patterns and locomotor-related evolutionary constraints in the hominoid vertebral column

    Open Access•Catalina I Villamil, Emily R Middleton•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 119

  • The role of developmental rate, body size, and positional behavior in the evolution of covariation and evolvability in the cranium of strepsirrhines and catarrhines

    Open Access•Catalina I Villamil•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 89

  • Morphometric analysis of fossil hylobatid molars from the Pleistocene of southern China

    Open Access•Alejandra Ortiz, Yingqi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 1

This study investigates the morphological variation and taxonomic affinities of 28 fossil gibbon molars from eight newly discovered Pleistocene cave sites in the area of Chongzuo, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. A recent descriptive analysis demonstrated that these fossil teeth form a uniform group that can be assigned to a single species of Nomascus. In this contribution, a two-dimensional morphometric approach is employed to examine th…

  • Locomotion and basicranial anatomy in primates and marsupials

    Open Access•Catalina I Villamil•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 58

  • Vertebral numbers and human evolution

    Open Access•A Williams, Scott A Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2016•Cited by: 28•References: 79

Ever since Tyson (1699), anatomists have noted and compared differences in the regional numbers of vertebrae among humans and other hominoids. Subsequent workers interpreted these differences in phylogenetic, functional, and behavioral frameworks and speculated on the history of vertebral numbers during human evolution. Even in a modern phylogenetic framework and with greatly expanded sample sizes of hominoid species, researchers’ conclusions var…
