  • Bank on It

Open Access•Awais Farid Khan, Andreas Chai et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Affairs•2026

While the experiential learning approach effectively improves financial literacy in developed countries, its applicability in developing countries faces resource constraints. However, expanding banking access in developing countries may enhance traditional financial education programs by enabling the practical application of learned financial concepts. Using a quasi‐experimental design, we examine this hypothesis by evaluating the impact of Pakis…

  • Time's up! How Rising Wages and Time Stress Shapes Green Preferences

    Open Access•Zakaria Babutsidze, Andreas Chai•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2025•References: 63

Many important pro‐environmental conservation practices do not only require money, but they also require time. This paper examines what role the shadow price of time plays in shaping green preferences across different behavioral domains. Using household production theory, we develop a simple model of “selfish” green consumer behavior that predicts how (i) rising wages and (ii) longer working hours influence how consumers trade‐off between purchas…

  • Why do the educated poor pay less price per calorie? Evidence from household-level calorie consumption data

Open Access•Kalyani Mangalika Lakmini Rathu Manannalage, Shyama Ratnasiri et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2024

Purpose While the monetary returns to education are well documented in the economics literature, the studies on non-monetary returns to education are scarce. The purpose of this study is to provide new insights into the non-market outcomes by exploring how education influences the food consumption choices of households and how these effects vary across different socio-economic groups using household-level calorie consumption data from Sri Lanka. …

  • Migrant well-being in Australia

    Open Access•Anita Staneva, Andreas Chai•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2024

Using rich longitudinal data from Australia, we investigate the mental health impacts and behaviours of migration resettlement in Australia, focusing on age, gender and locus of control as possible modifiers. We find that age profiles in mental health differ significantly between migrant and native populations. Our analysis of second-generation migrants supports the 'healthy migrant paradox', suggesting favourable mental health outcomes. Addition…

  • Virtual reality facilitates pro-environmental behavioural intentions

    Open Access•Chloe Hurrell, Andreas Chai et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 14

The pressing urgency of climate change calls for advancements in the way it is communicated. One communication option is the use of virtual reality (VR). The current research comprised two pilot studies to develop and test a virtual environment depicting proximal effects of climate change regarding the participant’s location. In both studies, an experimental design was employed and showed the environment to significantly affect psychological dist…

    Open Access•Andreas Chai, Alessio Moneta•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Engel curves describe how household expenditure on particular goods or services depends on household income. German statistician Ernst Engel (1821-1896) was the first to investigate this relationship systematically in an article published about 150 years ago. The best-known single result from the article is "Engel's law," which states that the poorer a family is, the larger the budget share it spends on nourishment. We revisit Engel's article, in…
