  • A Comparative Analysis of Oral Health and Self-Rated Health

Open Access•Jane A Weintraub, Kevin Moss et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Poor oral health can impact overall health. This study assessed the association between dental factors (dentate status and dental utilization) and self-rated health (S-RH) among older adults in two cross-sectional datasets: (1) NIH "All of Us (AoU) Research Program" (May 2018-July 2022 release) and (2) U.S. nationally representative "Health and Retirement Study" (HRS) 2018 wave. Participants aged ≥ 51 years were included in these analyses if (1) …

  • Associations Among Violence Victimization and/or Exploitation of Minors and Later Young Adulthood Violence

    Open Access•Hannabeth Franchino-Olsen, Sandra L Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Violence•2022•References: 1

Little is known about how minor sex exchange (MSE) may impact violence victimization during adulthood. This study investigates potential associations between MSE and forms of interpersonal violence victimization in young adulthood, while controlling for additional forms of violence experienced in childhood and adolescence. Data from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health ( n = 11,500 ) were used in this analysis. Multivaria…

  • Cohort Profile

Open Access•Kimon Divaris, Gary D Slade et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Early childhood caries (ECC) is an aggressive form of dental caries occurring in the first five years of life. Despite its prevalence and consequences, little progress has been made in its prevention and even less is known about individuals' susceptibility or genomic risk factors. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) of ECC ("ZOE 2.0") is a community-based, multi-ethnic, cross-sectional, genetic epidemiologic study seeking to address this kno…

  • Implementing an early childhood oral health program in a federally qualified health center in North Carolina

Open Access•Rocio B Quinonez, Rocio Quinonez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2018

bOHP increased dental visits among children ≤3 years but the finding might be attributable to clinic changes coinciding with bOHP implementation that were not controlled with the study design. Additional studies are needed in populations experiencing challenges accessing dental care

  • Absence of a moderating effect of parent health literacy on Early Head Start enrollment and dental use

Open Access•Jacqueline M Burgette, John S Preisser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2018

Parents in EHS had a higher prevalence of low HL compared to non-EHS parents. Parents' HL did not moderate the relationship between EHS and child dental use, suggesting that EHS results in similar improvements in dental use regardless of parent's HL levels

  • Impact of Early Head Start in North Carolina on Dental Care Use Among Children Younger Than 3 Years

Jacqueline M Burgette, John S Preisser et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2017•References: 16

Objectives. To examine the effects of North Carolina Early Head Start (EHS), an early education program for low-income children younger than 3 years and their families, on dental care use among children. Methods. We performed a quasi-experimental study in which we interviewed 479 EHS and 699 non-EHS parent–child dyads at baseline (2010–2012) and at a 24-month follow-up (2012–2014). We estimated the effects of EHS participation on the probability …

  • Propensity score weighting

Open Access•Jacqueline M Burgette, John S Preisser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2015

Although propensity scores derived from GBM and LRM both effectively balanced observed preintervention covariates, GBM resulted in better covariate balance compared with LRM. GBM also resulted in a larger effective sample size of the control group compared with LRM. Propensity score weighting using GBM is an effective statistical method to reduce confounding due to imbalanced distributions of measured preintervention covariates in this EHS interv…

  • Examining Continuity of Care for Medicaid-Enrolled Children Receiving Oral Health Services in Medical Offices

Open Access•Ashley M Kranz, R Gary Rozier et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2014

  • Effects of Early Dental Office Visits on Dental Caries Experience

Heather Beil, R Gary Rozier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Objectives. We determined the association between timing of a first dentist office visit before age 5 years and dental disease in kindergarten. Methods. We used North Carolina Medicaid claims (1999–2006) linked to state oral health surveillance data to compare caries experience for kindergarten students (2005–2006) who had a visit before age 60 months (n = 11 394) to derive overall exposure effects from a zero-inflated negative binomial regressio…

  • Comparing Medical and Dental Providers of Oral Health Services on Early Dental Caries Experience

Ashley M Kranz, R Gary Rozier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Objectives. Most state Medicaid programs reimburse nondental primary care providers (PCPs) for providing preventive oral health services to young children. We examined the association between who (PCP, dentist, or both) provides these services to Medicaid enrollees before age 3 years and oral health at age 5 years. Methods. We linked North Carolina Medicaid claims (1999–2006) to oral health surveillance data (2005–2006). Regression models estimat…

  • Effect of Early Preventive Dental Visits on Subsequent Dental Treatment and Expenditures

Heather Beil, Richard Gary Rozier et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2012•References: 14

OBJECTIVE: Professional organizations recommend a preventive dental visit by 1 year of age. This study compared dental treatment and expenditures for Medicaid children who have a preventive visit before the age of 18 months with those who have a visit at age 18-42 months. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used reimbursement claims for 19,888 children enrolled in North Carolina Medicaid (1999-2006). We compared the number of dental treatmen…

  • Oral health activities of Early Head Start teachers directed toward children and parents

Open Access•Ashley M Kranz, R Gary Rozier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2011

The level of oral health activity in EHS programs is less than optimal. Several characteristics of EHS staff were identified that can be targeted with education interventions. Evidence for effectiveness of EHS interventions needs to be strengthened, but results of this survey provide encouraging findings about the potential effects of teacher training on their oral health practices

  • Multiple imputation of dental caries data using a zero-inflated Poisson regression model

Open Access•Bhavna T Pahel, John S Preisser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2010

This technique can be easily applied to impute missing dental caries data

    Karl J Krobot, William C Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2004•References: 15

BACKGROUND: Drug provision within the German statutory health insurance system has undergone several reforms, including the introduction of drug macrobudgets in 1993. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the extent to which statutorily (SHI) and fully privately (PHI) health-insured patients were provided with new medication recommended by professional bodies in an equitable fashion using the example of migraine patients. RESE…

  • Mobility Patterns of Migrant Farmworkers in North Carolina

    A Quandt, Sara A Quandt et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2002

Occupational health research often relies on longitudinal data to link exposures and health outcomes. Studies of migrant and seasonal farmworker health face special challenges. Farmworkers are difficult to track, and many occupational health outcomes require considerable time to develop. Using data from two longitudinal studies of farmworker health in North Carolina, we: 1) describe migration during one summer (amount, reasons, destinations); and…
