Resilience promotion through religiosity among Chilean older adults during the global outbreak of Covid-19
The stressors caused by the pandemic, as well as a lockdown measure generated a greater mental and emotional burden in many individuals, especially among older people. This qualitative study examined from 22 semi-structured interviews how religiosity acted as a psychosocial resource that promoted resilience, positive coping, and social support among older Chilean adults. Religious older adults not only showed a strong capacity for resilience, but…
Consequences of caring for the physical health, mental health and subjective well-being of Chilean older adults
Using a propensity score matching approach, this study evaluates the effect of caring on the physical health, mental health and subjective well-being of Chilean older people. The average treatment effect was not significant in any of the outcomes to physical health. However, older carers – and those who care intensely – were more likely to have depressive and anxious symptomatology and lower life satisfaction than older non-carers. Interventions …
Religious Coping, Experiential Avoidance, Self-Compassion, and Post-Traumatic Stress by Covid-19
Gender and family structures affecting intergenerational support from adult children to older parents
In Latin America, informal support from adult children to their older parents ("upward support") is crucial with an aging population and insufficient coverage of social protection systems. This article examines variables associated with upward support, distinguishing by gender of parents and their children. The research design is quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional. It is based on primary survey data collected by the authors for the …
Predictors of Unmet Needs in Chilean Older People with Dependency
Approximately one in five Chilean older adults has some degree of dependency. Limited evidence is available on self-perceived needs in Latin-American older people. The main aim of this study was to identify predictors of unmet needs of dependent older persons without cognitive impairment, considering personal and primary informal caregivers' factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 77 dyads of older people with dependenc…
An Analysis of the Relationship Between Religiosity and Psychological Well-Being in Chilean Older People Using Structural Equation Modeling
Using a representative sample, we explored the relationship of organizational (ORA), non-organizational (NORA), and intrinsic religiosity (IR) with depressive and anxious symptomatology and loneliness in Chilean older people, and examined mediating mechanisms. Structural Equation Modeling showed a direct effect between ORA and reduced depressive symptomatology and between IR and anxious symptomatology; for indirect effects, the relationship betwe…
Grandparent-grandchild relationships, generativity, subjective well-being and self-rated health of older people in Chile
Depressive Symptomology, Identity and Religious Practices among Catholics and Evangelicals
Background: Chile is a highly religious country. Although a majority of the population describes itself as Catholic, there has been a substantial growth in Evangelism, especially among indigenous people. In this context, the aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between Catholic and Evangelical religiosity in terms of identity and practices and depressive symptoms in the Mapuche and non-indigenous Chilean population. Methods: The study…
Persistence of the norm of filial obligation among Chilean adults
Norms of filial obligation can predict how and whether children provide support to their ageing parents. Using a nationally representative sample, this study describes the degree to which Chilean adults adhere to these norms, and analyses which variables are associated with their degree of adherence to these norms. It found that adults are more likely to adhere to these norms when their parents require special care. Using linear regression models…
Does the selective attrition of a panel survey of older people affect the multivariate estimations of subjective well-being
