Readiness to Provide Neonatal Care Services in 208 Ethiopian Hospitals Prior to Implementation of the Saving Little Lives Program
Introduction: Despite improved health service accessibility, neonatal mortality in Ethiopia remains high at 33 per 1000 live births. Thus, improving health facilities’ readiness across infrastructure, basic amenities, equipment, medications, laboratory services, Kangaroo Mother Care, infection prevention and control, staffing, and guidelines availability is critical for improving the quality of neonatal care and survival. Objective: The aim of th…
Saving Little Lives Minimum Care Package Interventions in 290 Public Health Facilities in Ethiopia
A non-randomized stepped-wedge trial will be conducted to evaluate the impact of implementing the SLL MCP interventions. Quantitative evaluation data will be collected from 36 primary hospitals, selected from 206 primary hospitals across four regions, receiving the interventions. An independent evaluation research assistant will be deployed in each of the hospitals to collect data using Open Data Kit (ODK) through interviewing mothers before disc…
Data science and artificial intelligence for maternal, newborn and child health
The limited application of data science and artificial intelligence in MNCH at the national level highlights a significant gap in Africa. Our review found that 28 studies (53.8%) were research projects compared to operational implementations integrated into routine systems to inform policy. Main barriers include inadequate infrastructure, limited data stewardship capacity, and insufficient government commitment. Opportunities exist through Africa…
Effect of context-based instructional approach on students’ science process skills acquisition in environmental concepts
The purpose of the study was to determine how students’ acquisition of Integrated Science Process Skills (ISPS) was affected by the integration of a context-based instructional approach (CBIA) with the five stages of the learning cycle (5Es LC). Pre- and post-test assessments were administered using a quasi-experimental design to two groups of ninth-grade students: 46 students in the treatment group who were exposed to CBIA and 48 students in the…
Health system barriers to the first dose of measles immunization in Ethiopia
Our research highlighted significant health system barriers to MCV 1 immunization, contributing to unmet EPI targets in Ethiopia. Our results suggest that to accelerate the country towards measles elimination, there is an urgent need to improve the health systems components such as service delivery, information systems, as well as access to vaccine and cold chain technologies
Influences of Teachers’ Characteristics on Their Gender-Responsive Pedagogy Practices
The study assessed the influences of science teachers’ sex and teaching experiences on their gender-responsive pedagogy (GRP) practices of general secondary schools of North Wollo Zone, Ethiopia. It used a case study design and considered science department heads and school principals, and students as data sources comprehensively and purposively, respectively. The researchers collected data via interview and focus group discussion (FGD) and analy…

Teachers' views on values-education
The main purpose of this article is to investigate teachers' beliefs in values-education by considering secondary schools. To this end, a qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected from teachers, principals, and students, mainly through semi-structured interviews. Interview reports were then presented in vignette form and analyzed based on our reflective interpretations from the perspective of participants through the narrati…
‘The false reporter will get a praise and the one who reported truth will be discouraged’
INTRODUCTION: Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) are vital to ensure accountability and for making decisions including for tracking the Sustainable Development Goals. The Ethiopia Health Sector Transformation Plan II includes preventing data falsification as a major strategic initiative and our study aimed to explore the reasons why healthcare providers intentionally falsify maternal and newborn health (MNH) data in two regions of Ethio…

Elevating Teachers' Professional Capital
This study examined the contribution of teachers' engagement in collaborative professional learning, engagement in individualized professional learning, and job satisfaction to their professional capital development using structural equation modeling. The study tested three hypotheses: teachers' level of engagement in collaborative professional learning and development activities has a significant contribution to their professional capital develo…
Scaling up Kangaroo Mother Care in Ethiopia and India
OBJECTIVES: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), prolonged skin-to-skin care of the low birth weight baby with the mother plus exclusive breastfeeding reduces neonatal mortality. Global KMC coverage is low. This study was conducted to develop and evaluate context-adapted implementation models to achieve improved coverage. DESIGN: This study used mixed-methods applying implementation science to develop an adaptable strategy to improve implementation. Forma…
Small and sick newborn care during the Covid-19 pandemic
INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting health systems globally. Maternity care disruptions have been surveyed, but not those related to vulnerable small newborns. We aimed to survey reported disruptions to small and sick newborn care worldwide and undertake thematic analysis of healthcare providers' experiences and proposed mitigation strategies. METHODS: Using a widely disseminated online survey in three languages, we reached out to n…
Could Covid-19 Reverse the Modest Gains Made in Newborn Health in Ethiopia
‘I exist because of we’
Objectives Suboptimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) dramatically hampers the achievement of the UNAIDS HIV treatment targets. This study aimed to develop a theory-informed predictive model for ART adherence based on data from Chinese. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shenzhen, China, in December 2020. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling, completing a survey that included sociodemographic characteristi…
Covid-19 in Ethiopia
T he COVID-19 pandemic is a time of many predictions and rapid learning. Early on, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified Ethiopia as one of thirteen countries in Africa as a top priority for COVID-19 preparedness Surprisingly and thankfully, while an early catastrophic outbreak was feared, the rise in COVID-19 cases in Ethiopia has continued to be slow, with few significant health systems impacts or changes in the patterns of morbidity a…
