Links Among Eating Disorder Characteristics, Exercise Patterns, and Psychological Attributes in College Students
This study examined associations among eating disorder characteristics, excessive exercise, and selected psychological attributes in college students ( N = 499). Male and female participants were recruited from university psychology courses and administered the Obligatory Exercise Questionnaire (OEQ), Mental Health Inventory, Eating Self-Efficacy Scale, Revised Restraint Scale, and Eating Disorder Inventory. Intrinsic Motivation and Performance Standards
In an experiment investigating the effects of performance standards on the intrinsic motivation of college students, male and female subjects were presented with one of two levels of a performance standard (constant or accelerating) in a number guessing task. During a free time period after completion of the task, observations of the subjects' continued play with the number task were made. A self report questionnaire of intrinsic motivation was a…
Psychological Androgyny and Social Competence
The present study investigated the relationship between psychological androgyny and three self-report indicators of social competence: quality of interpersonal behavioral skills, level of interpersonal anxiety, and amount of social activity. 261 college students (150 men) of high androgyny were significantly more competent than low subjects
Multimodal evaluation of therapy versus consultation components in a large inner‐city early intervention program
Cincinnati's Social Skills Development Program (SSDP) used a social competence model to direct its interventions for children. Systematic screening identified 15-25% of the primary grade children who showed behavioral problems and deficits in social skills at seven elementary schools. Multimodal evaluations comparing therapy and consultation interventions included three types of assessments over a 1 year period. Tests of social skills revealed th…
A Factor Analytic Study of Social Competence in Women
In an attempt to uncover the dimensions of heterosocial competence in college women, two independent samples of subjects (n 1 = 149, n 2 = 120) were given 14 questionnaires designed to measure selected aspects of social competence. Scores on these instruments were factor analyzed using both maximum likelihood and Kaiser's Little filly solutions. Loadings obtained from both samples suggested three major dimensions: heterosexual anxiety, social sel…
Covert Reinforcement
Two studies are reported: the first extends the generality of covert reinforcement; the second poses a question about the processes that underlie behavior change with this procedure. Exp. 1, conducted with 50 male hospitalized psychiatric patients, indicated that covert reinforcement produced a significant change in plural-noun responding on a word naming task. Exp. 2, using the same experimental design, with 25 male and 25 female college student…
Assessment of Social Competence in an Evaluation-Interaction Analogue1
Forty men were selected from a larger pool of 235 college students who had completed three questionnaires designed to measure social competence. Twenty high socially competent and 20 low socially competent college men were given either positive or negative feedback by a woman confederate in a five-minute dyadic interaction. The confederate made either four all-positive or all-negative statements on the impression she was forming about the men dur…
