  • Enhanced policy adequacy facilitates national climate adaptation tracking across Africa

  • Overcoming collapse of farming systems

Open Access•Bárbara Soriano, Wim Paas et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2024

Farming systems in Europe are perceived by stakeholders as having a low level of resilience and sustainability when confronted with shocks and ongoing stresses. Specifically, European extensive livestock systems are faced with challenges such as low farm income, uncertain policies, and changing meat consumption patterns, which are causing these systems to decline. Focused on the extensive sheep farming system in Huesca (Spain), our aim with this …

  • Alternative systems and strategies to improve future sustainability and resilience of farming systems across Europe

Open Access•Pytrik Reidsma, Francesco Accatino et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2023•References: 51

According to stakeholders, many European farming systems are close to critical thresholds regarding the challenges they face (e.g., droughts, price declines), functions they deliver (e.g., economic viability, biodiversity and habitat) and attributes required for resilience (e.g., social self-organization). To accelerate a transition process towards sustainable and resilient agriculture, this study aimed to identify actor-supported alternative sys…

While adoption rates for inorganic fertiliser are relatively high in Ethiopia, application rates are generally considered agronomically suboptimal. Using recent data on Ethiopian smallholder maize producers, we showed that maize response to nitrogen, and the profitability of fertiliser use depended on maize agronomy. The agronomic optimum ranged from 0 to 344 kg/ha with a mean value of 209 kg/ha. The actual nitrogen application rates were only ab…

  • Participatory assessment of critical thresholds for resilient and sustainable European farming systems

Open Access•Wim Paas, Francesco Accatino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Farming systems in Europe are experiencing multiple stresses and shocks that may push systems beyond critical thresholds after which system change is expected to occur. These critical thresholds may lie in the economic, environmental, social and institutional domain. In this paper we take a participatory approach with involvement of farming system stakeholders to assess the presence of critical thresholds in 11 European farming systems, and the p…

Scenarios describe plausible and internally consistent views of the future. They can be used by scientists, policymakers and entrepreneurs to explore the challenges of global environmental change given an appropriate level of spatial and sectoral detail and systematic development. We followed a nine-step protocol to extend and enrich a set of global scenarios - the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) - providing regional and sectoral detail for…

  • A framework to assess the resilience of farming systems

    Open Access•M P M Meuwissen, Peter H Feindt et al.•ARTICLE•Agricultural Systems•2019

Agricultural systems in Europe face accumulating economic, ecological and societal challenges, raising concerns about their resilience to shocks and stresses. These resilience issues need to be addressed with a focus on the regional context in which farming systems operate because farms, farmers' organizations, service suppliers and supply chain actors are embedded in local environments and functions of agriculture . We define resilience of a far…

  • Sustainable development goal 2

Open Access•Juliana Dias Bernardes Gil, Pytrik Reidsma et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 25

The pursuit of global food security and agricultural sustainability, the dual aim of the second sustainable development goal (SDG-2), requires urgent and concerted action from developing and developed countries. This, in turn, depends on clear and universally applicable targets and indicators which are partially lacking. The novel and complex nature of the SDGs poses further challenges to their implementation on the ground, especially in the face…

  • Climate change impact and adaptation research requires integrated assessment and farming systems analysis

    Open Access•Pytrik Reidsma, J Wolf et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Rather than on crop modelling only, climate change impact assessments in agriculture need to be based on integrated assessment and farming systems analysis, and account for adaptation at different levels. With a case study for Flevoland, the Netherlands, we illustrate that (1) crop models cannot account for all relevant climate change impacts and adaptation options, and (2) changes in technology, policy and prices have had and are likely to have …

  • Regional Farm Diversity Can Reduce Vulnerability of Food Production to Climate Change

    Open Access•Pytrik Reidsma, Frank Ewert•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2008•Cited by: 3

Food production must adapt in the face of climate change. In Europe, projected vulnerability of food production to climate change is particularly high in Mediterranean regions. Increasing agricultural diversity has been suggested as an adaptation strategy, but empirical evidence is lacking. We analyzed the relationship between regional farm diversity (i.e., diversity among farm types) and the effects of climate variability on regional wheat (Trit…
