Open Access•Christophe Falguères, Qingfeng Shao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 40

Assigning an age to the nearly complete cranium found in the Petralona Cave in Greece is of outstanding importance because this fossil has a key position in European human evolution. This topic has been debated since its discovery more than 60 years ago, highlighting the difficulties in applying physical dating methods to prehistoric samples. Previous results obtained on various types of samples yielded a large age range between about 170 and 700…

  • Plio-Quaternary coastal uplift along the western Iberian Margin

    Open Access•Margarida Gouveia, Pedro P Cunha et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025•References: 1

This study presents a detailed geomorphological and geochronological analysis of a marine terrace staircase developed into the Peniche Peninsula (Portugal), a rocky headland of Jurassic carbonate bedrock located in the central sector of the Western Iberian passive margin. The marine terrace levels are described morphologically and sedimentologically, but also dated using ESR and U-Series methodologies. The marine terrace staircase comprises six e…

  • An integrative study of new environmental and cultural data from the Hoabinhian of Laang Spean Cave (Cambodia) including modern human remains

Although the Hoabinhian culture is renowned for its unifacial pebble tools and its discovery dates back more than a century, only a handful of sites provide complete information on this period. The site of Laang Spean, in Cambodia, has recently been described as a burial cave for the Neolithic period, but it was previously known as an emblematic Hoabinhian site for Cambodia. More comprehensive studies indicate that it offers a wide window onto th…

  • Testing the Use of Xad Resin to Remove Synthetic Contamination From Archaeological Bone Prior to Radiocarbon Dating

Open Access•L G van der Sluis, Antoine Zazzo et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•References: 44

Museum collections are extremely valuable sources of material for ongoing research, although the conservation history of some objects is not always recorded, which can be problematic for chemical analyses. While most contamination is removed using the acid-base-acid treatment, this may not be the case for cross-linked contamination. The XAD resin protocol was implemented at the radiocarbon ( 14 C) laboratory in the Muséum national d’Histoire natu…

  • New discoveries and re-discoveries of human remains from the late Middle Pleistocene

Open Access•Amélie Vialet, Laura Martín‐francé et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2023

The fame of the prehistoric sites of Montmaurin is based on the discovery in 1949 of a human mandible of archaic morphology appearance, now curated at the Musée de l’Homme. It comes from a karstic chimney called La Niche. Nearby is the Coupe-Gorge cave, which is larger than the Niche, although it was cut off by a quarry, and in which Louis Méroc undertook excavations with his team from 1946 to 1961. He uncovered some human remains which were late…

The Early to Middle Pleistocene Transition (EMPT) is characterised by major environmental changes and evolutionary innovations within the genus Homo but the scarcity of the African EMPT fossil and archaeological records obscures its palaeoecological context. Here, we present archaeological and faunal evidence from a newly excavated West-Turkana EMPT site-Kanyimangin

Open Access•Guilhem Mauran, Benoît Caron et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Curation of archaeological materials often leads to carrying out multi-analytical methodologies that combine non-invasive and invasive elemental analyses. Such materials are often analysed with different techniques. It results in the production of complementary but apparently non-compatible compositional datasets that cannot be easily compared. In the present paper, we propose to compare results acquired on geological ferruginous colouring matter…

Renewed in-depth multi-disciplinary investigation of a large coastal mound settlement in Peru has extended the occupation back more than 7000 years to a first human exploitation ~13720 BP. Research by the authors has chronicled the prehistoric sequence from the activities of the first maritime foragers to the construction of the black mound and the introduction of horticulture and monumentality.
