  • A History of the Three-Equation New Keynesian Model as a Pedagogical Device

Béatrice Cherrier, Aurélien Saïdi•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2026

This article examines how pedagogical concerns shaped the development of the three-equation New Keynesian model, which became the dominant framework for teaching and evaluating monetary policy from the 1990s onward. Contrary to the standard narrative, the model did not originate in classrooms or academic journals but in central bank workshops. We show that the many macroeconomists who proposed small models in the 1990s simultaneously targeted res…

  • From coordination devices to coordination failures

Aurélien Saïdi•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2024

The widespread adoption of the rational expectations hypothesis in macroeconomics since the 1970s often overlooked the issue of coordinating individual decisions, particularly regarding expectations. How is common knowledge, essential for rational expectations equilibrium, established? When common knowledge supports multiple equilibria, how do expectations converge to a specific one? These questions have been central to sunspot literature, which …

  • Write Your Model Almost as You Would on Paper and Dynare Will Take Care of the Rest!” A History of the Dynare Software

Open Access•Béatrice Cherrier, Aurélien Saïdi et al.•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2023

According to its creator Michel Juillard, Dynare is a “pre-processor and a collection of routines” aimed at solving and estimating non-linear rational expectation models. This article focuses on the role of Dynare in the dissemination of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models in academia and policymaking institutions. The case of Dynare highlights how the dissemination across the profession of theoretical principles and modelling pr…

  • A Century of Economics and Engineering at Stanford

Béatrice Cherrier, Aurélien Saïdi•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 22

This article documents the disciplinary exchanges between economists and engineers at Stanford throughout the twentieth century. We outline the role of key scholars such as Kenneth Arrow and Robert Wilson, as well as engineers turned administrators like Frederick Terman. We show that engineers drew upon economic theories of decision and allocation to improve practical industrial management decisions. Reciprocally, economists found in engineering …

  • How Saline Is the Solow Residual

    Aurélien Saïdi•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2019•References: 50

In a 1957 paper, Robert Solow exploited the mathematical properties of the aggregate production function to isolate the role of disembodied "technical change" in economic growth. Solow's method allowed economists to disentangle the role of technical change from that of production factors, with the residual serving as a measure of total factor productivity growth. His method and results were met equally with praise and criticism. The interrogation…

  • The Indeterminate Fate of Sunspots in Economics

Béatrice Cherrier, Aurélien Saïdi•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 65

The standard view of the history of macroeconomics is one of a series of battles between schools of thought, eventually resolved through a "new neoclassical synthesis" achieved during the 1990s. Recently, however, historians have challenged the very notion that macroeconomists' models and practices can adequately be understood as a series of battles between schools of thought. Our purpose, in this article, is to tell the story of another set of r…

  • Do Followers Really Matter in Stackelberg Competition

Open Access•Ludovic A Julien, Ludovic Julien et al.•ARTICLE•Lecturas de Economía•2012

In this paper, we consider a T-stage linear model of Stackelberg oligopoly. First, we show geometrically and analytically that under the two conditions of linear market demand and identical constant marginal costs, the T-stage Stackelberg model reduces to a model where T oligopolies exploit residual demand sequentially. At any stage, leaders behave as if followers did not matter. Second, we study social welfare and convergence toward competitive …
