  • The Earliest Evidence of the Manufacturing of Solutions and Viscoplastic Mixtures From Paint Pigments on the Russian Plain in the Middle Paleolithic

Open Access•Maria Zheltova, Maria Komagorova et al.•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2025

The article presents the results of studying a series of small individual pigment particles discovered in the cultural layer of the Chelyuskinets II site, which is part of the Lower Volga Middle Paleolithic group together with the Eurasian reference site Sukhaya Mechetka and the Zaikino Pepelishche site. Preliminary results of OSL dating indicate the age of the cultural layer in the range of 150–165 thousand years BP (mid-MIS 6). The pigments of …

  • Color of Small Ochre Fragments from the Upper Paleolithic Sites Kapova Cave and Kamennaya Balka II (Russia)

Open Access•Yulia Anisovets, Vladislav Zhitenev et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•References: 4

A technique for characterizing the color of small ochre samples was proposed. The technique includes visual color determination with the aid of a stereomicroscope and a Munsell Soil Color Chart, conversion of Munsell values to CIE L*a*b* coordinates, cluster analysis, and principle component analysis (PCA). The technique was applied to ochre samples from the Kapova Cave and Kamennaya Balka II Upper Paleolithic sites. Characterization of the color…

  • Pigments from the cultural layer and the male burial of Sungir

Open Access•Vladislav Zhitenev, Vladislava Lavrova et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2024

Mineral pigments are one of the most common categories of finds at the sites of the Upper Paleolithic. The authors' approach to the study of pigments is based on a detailed study of all available samples. The results of the archaeological study are complemented by the results of natural science analyses and expand the understanding of the utilitarian and symbolic use of ochre on the sites of the Upper Paleolithic. Statistical processing of the re…

  • Population genomics of Bronze Age Eurasia

Open Access•Morten E Allentoft, Mateusz Sikora et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

The Bronze Age of Eurasia (around 3000–1000 BC) was a period of major cultural changes. However, there is debate about whether these changes resulted from the circulation of ideas or from human migrations, potentially also facilitating the spread of languages and certain phenotypic traits. We investigated this by using new, improved methods to sequence low-coverage genomes from 101 ancient humans from across Eurasia. We show that the Bronze Age w…
