Applied Multivariate Statistics for the Social Sciences
Now in its 6th edition, the authoritative textbook Applied Multivariate Statistics for the Social Sciences, continues to provide advanced students with a practical and conceptual understanding of statistical procedures through examples and data-sets from actual research studies. With the added expertise of co-author Keenan Pituch (University of Texas-Austin), this 6th edition retains many key features of the previous editions, including its bread…
Applied Multivariate Statistics for the Social Sciences
This best-selling text is written for those who use, rather than develop, advanced statistical methods. Dr. Stevens focuses on a conceptual understanding of the material rather than proving results. Helpful narrative and numerous examples enhance understanding, and a chapter on matrix algebra serves as a review. Printouts from SPSS and SAS with annotations indicate what the numbers mean and encourage interpretation of the results. In addition to …

The Effectiveness of Self-Directed and Lecture/Discussion Stress Management Approaches and The Locus of Control of Teachers
This study examined the interaction effects of two stress management strategies, directed lecture discussion versus self-directed, and the locus of control of teachers. Eighty-five teachers were pre- and posttested on the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Subjective Stress Scales. Subjects were pretested on the Locus of Control Scale, and approximately half of each of the extreme scores were randomly assigned to the treatment groups. The resu…

Studying Canonical Analysis
Robert M. Thorndike (1976) commented on the results of a Monte Carlo study on the stability of canonical correlations, canonical weights, and canonical variate-variable correlations (Barcikowski and Stevens, 1975). In this paper each of his comments are examined by the authors of the Monte Carlo Study. In addition, a possible solution to the large number of subjects necessary for stable weights and variate-variable correlations using ridge regres…
The Interaction Between The Internal—External Locus of Control and Two Methods of College Instruction
This aptitude-treatment interaction study classified 68 subjects as external or internal. Approximately half of the externals (internals) were given a traditional, teacher controlled method of instruction, with the remaining subjects being involved in a contract for grade plan. At the conclusion of an eight week course in introductory psychology, all subjects were given a 75 item multiple choice achievement posttest. Analysis of covariance was us…
The Interaction between The Internal -- External Locus of Control and Two Methods of College Instruction

A Monte Carlo Study of the Stability of Canonical Correlations, Canonical Weights and Canonical Variate-Variable Correlations
A Monte Carlo study was run to check the stability of canonical correlations, canonical weights, and canonical variate-variable correlations. Eight data matrices were selected from the literature for the canonical analyses, with the number of variables ranging from 7 to 41. The results showed that the canonical correlations are very stable upon replication. The results also indicated that there is no solid evidence for concluding that the compone…
Step-Down Analysis and Simultaneous Confidence Intervals in Manova
Two fundamental ways of analyzing a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) problem in more detail are the stepdown analysis (Roy, 1958; Bock, 1963), and the use of simultaneous confidence intervals (Gabriel, 1968; Morrison, 1967). Assuming a global test of significance, such as Wilk's A, has indicated non- ohance association between the independent variable and the set of dependent variables (this paper will limit discussion to the one- way d…
Four Methods of Analyzing Between Variation for the K-Group Manova Problem
Four methods of analyzing between variation in the k-group MANOVA problem are considered. Specifically, they are (1) discriminant analysis, (2) stepdown analysis, (3) contrasts on the classification variable and (4) a two group breakdown. These methods are discussed briefly, with certain basic com- puting equations being given. Then a sample problem is used to illustrate how the methods may be applied and interpreted. The univariate h2 (squared c…
Global Measures of Association in Multivariate Analysis of Variance
Four possible global measures of association for estimating strength of association in MANOVA are presented, One of them, Wilks's generalization of eta squared, is rejected because of undesirable properties. Of the other three, one in- volves Wilks's Lamda, with the remaining two involving the trace statistic V. It is now that an unbiased estimate can be obtained for V, and hence that the global measure involving this unbiased estimate might be t…
