Varieties of Political Economy in Capitalism With Slavery
This essay dialogs with David Eltis’s article in this issue of Almanack and highlights Eltis’s contributions to Brazilian studies of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. It focuses on the historical relationship between “capitalism” and “slavery”, particularly the “second slavery” of the nineteenth century, with an emphasis on changing Anglo-American and Luso-Brazilian “political economies”. Like Eltis’s article, it is especially concerned with …

Diferentes atores sociais do campo religioso (evangélico) e científico (genética/biologia) manifestaram-se então so…
Choice and access to the best schools of Rio de Janeiro
Each year in the city of Rio de Janeiro a ritual takes place for selecting and distributing groups of pupils among schools providing the second phase of primary education. Called remanejamento or reallocation, this process involves school directors, education coordinators and the families of pupils. Since part of the process is protected by secrecy, complete access to the rite proved impossible. However it was possible to analyse what happens thr…
Classifications and moral values in student evaluation boards
This article is an analysis of student evaluation board meetings as a space that reveals the classification systems and mechanisms present in the school and which underpin its moral order. Through field work in a federal school in Rio de Janeiro we aimed to understand how these moral criteria form hierarchies which produce different ways of evaluating students, and as a consequence, inequality
The school as a project for the future
This article presents reflections of indigenous teachers about the role of the school in a new Pataxó indigenous community settlement in the state of Minas Gerais. The data was collected in 'narrative interviews' with teachers from this community who attended the first Intercultural Education for Indigenous Educators (FIEI) course offered by the Federal University at Minas Gerais. In these narratives, both the indigenous school and FIEI are seen …

Brazil
This article reviews scholarship on the history and historiography of slavery in Brazil. Brazil possessed a more varied slave economy with a much larger sector producing for the internal market than scholars had previously thought. The already large slave population of Minas Gerais increased dramatically from 168,543 in 1819 to 381,893 in 1872. Minas Gerais consisted of an intricate mercantile system based on slave labour that not only supplied f…

A viewpoint on the dispute among anthropologists over racially targeted policies in Brazil
The politics of ' racial ' classification in Brazil
The politics of « racial » classification in Brazil. This paper traces the genealogy of « racial » taxonomies in Brazil arguing that recent policies which focus on the « black population » or the « black community » depend upon a belief that Brazilian society is neatly divided into « blacks » and « not blacks », thus superseding taxonomies which produce ambiguous « racial » categories based on the social « appearance » of individuals. The paper a…

Male Homosexuality and Spirit Possession in Brazil
This paper examines the relationship between male homosexuality and the Afro-Brazilian possession cults in Belém do Parà. After a discussion of the literature follows a description of the cults' beliefs, rites and social organization. Male sex roles are then discussed and the two categories, bicha and man, analyzed. It is noted that there is no term which is equivalent to the western category of "homosexual" in this taxonomic system. After puttin…

Spirits of Protest
In this study, Peter Fry describes and analyses spirit-mediumship amongst a community of Zezuru people living near Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). He examines the belief system which underpins spirit-mediumship and the basis of the mediums' authority. He pays special attention to the way in which religious beliefs are used politically in specific social situations ranging from village disputes to issues of national importance. Instead …

Cultures of difference. The aftermath of Portuguese and British colonial policies in southern Africa

The Great Porpoise-Skull Strike
In late December 1816, the English merchant and amateur naturalist John Luccock left the city of Rio de Janeiro for a boat “excursion to the upper [part of Guanabara] Bay” (the water on which the city fronted) and to “the rivers falling into it.” After several days of travel on a launch captained by a Portuguese sailor and manned by “four stout negroes,” he put in to a harbor on one of the bay's many small islands. En route, his interest in geolo…
