The effect of retirement on cardiovascular disease
The rise in CVD incidence underscores the importance of monitoring individuals during the transition out of the labor force, particularly among groups that appear more vulnerable, such as women, individuals with lower levels of education, and blue-collar workers. These findings also emphasize the need to reconsider the mechanisms through which retirement influences health
Global fertility in 204 countries and territories, 1950–2021, with forecasts to 2100
BACKGROUND: Accurate assessments of current and future fertility-including overall trends and changing population age structures across countries and regions-are essential to help plan for the profound social, economic, environmental, and geopolitical challenges that these changes will bring. Estimates and projections of fertility are necessary to inform policies involving resource and health-care needs, labour supply, education, gender equality,…
Global burden of 288 causes of death and life expectancy decomposition in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1990–2021
BACKGROUND: Regular, detailed reporting on population health by underlying cause of death is fundamental for public health decision making. Cause-specific estimates of mortality and the subsequent effects on life expectancy worldwide are valuable metrics to gauge progress in reducing mortality rates. These estimates are particularly important following large-scale mortality spikes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. When systematically analysed, mort…
Global age-sex-specific mortality, life expectancy, and population estimates in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1950–2021, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic
BACKGROUND: Estimates of demographic metrics are crucial to assess levels and trends of population health outcomes. The profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on populations worldwide has underscored the need for timely estimates to understand this unprecedented event within the context of long-term population health trends. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 provides new demographic estimates for 204 cou…
Police killings and suicide among Black Americans
Black Americans are killed at higher rates by police than whites. Previous studies have shown that discrimination can lead to suicidal ideation, and that mental health of Black Americans deteriorates after police killings. The objective of this study is to examine whether police killings are associated with an increase in suicide rates amongst Black Americans. Controlling for a number of factors, we found that on months with at least one killing …

Does economic recession impact newborn health? Evidence from Greece
The impact of the Greek economic adjustment programme on household health expenditure
In late 2009, Greece faced an unprecedented sovereign debt crisis and shortly after signed a large-scale economic adjustment program (EAP) that brought about several changes and reforms to the Greek health care system. As a result, households experienced the "triple hit" of decreased availability and capacity of the public health system, increased user charges, and lower ability to pay for health care. This study examines how households behaved i…
Are happy people healthier? An instrumental variable approach using data from Greece
BACKGROUND: From a theoretical perspective, several studies indicate that happiness and health are-in some extent-interrelated. Despite the mechanisms explaining the relationship between happiness and health, there is still no consensus regarding this link. Using recently collected primary data, this study aims to examine the relationship between happiness and health, and identify potential heterogeneity in the association depending on socioecono…
Subjective social status, social network and health disparities
Our findings are consistent with the existing literature and confirm a social gradient in health. According to our analysis, health disparities can be largely attributed to socioeconomic inequalities. The adverse economic climate has impact on socioeconomic differences which in turn affect health disparities. Based on these, policy initiatives are necessasy in order to mitigate the negative impact on health and the disparities caused by economic …
Indebtedness, Socioeconomic Status, and Self‐Rated Health
Greece has been facing a massive economic downturn during the last several years, which has several implications for living standards. This study aims to examine the relationship between several variables and self‐rated health (SRH), focusing on the impact of household indebtedness on health. Our empirical strategy is based on an ordered logistic regression in which SRH is the dependent variable, whereas several demographic and socioeconomic vari…
Barriers in access to healthcare services for chronic patients in times of austerity
Barriers in access can be mainly attributed to income decrease and unemployment. In this context, health policy measures are essential for removing barriers in access. Otherwise, inequalities may increase and chronic patients' health status will be deteriorated. These consequences imply adverse effects on health expenditure
Drug and Cash Donations to Developing Countries
A global economic crisis should not prevent aid towards developing countries, but it calls for wiser and more effective policies. This article proposes specific interventions with regard to drug donations, as well as a more general mentality which should govern related policies. It is generally acknowledged that donations in cash are preferable to donations in kind, but many problems persist either way, rendering obvious that some alternative app…
