Personal and neighborhood low-cost monitoring to change air pollution awareness, perceptions, and behaviors
The Promises and Potential Pitfalls of Highway Reclamation for Population Health
Perceived built environment characteristics associated with walking and cycling across 355 communities in 21 countries
Developing indicators of age-friendly neighbourhood environments for urban and rural communities across 20 low-, middle-, and high-income countries
This study indicates the extent to which environmental supports for healthy ageing may be less readily available to older adults residing in rural areas and LMIC and augments calls to tailor WHO's existing indicators to a broader range of communities in order to achieve a critical aspect of distributional equity in an ageing world
Neighborhood Greenspace and Socioeconomic Risk are Associated with Diabetes Risk at the Sub-neighborhood Scale
Greenspace and socioeconomic status are known correlates of diabetes prevalence, but their combined effects at the sub-neighborhood scale are not yet known. This study derives, maps, and validates a combined socioeconomic/greenspace index of individual-level diabetes risk at the sub-neighborhood scale, without the need for clinical measurements. In two Canadian cities (Vancouver and Hamilton), we computed 4 greenspace variables from satellite ima…
Predicting perceptions of the built environment using GIS, satellite and street view image approaches
BACKGROUND: High quality built environments are important for human health and wellbeing. Numerous studies have characterized built environment physical features and environmental exposures, but few have examined urban perceptions at geographic scales needed for population-based research. The degree to which urban perceptions are associated with different environmental features, and traditional environmental exposures such as air pollution or urb…
GPS-based built environment measures associated with adult physical activity
Modifiable risk factors, cardiovascular disease, and mortality in 155 722 individuals from 21 high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries (Pure)
Evaluating street view exposure measures of visible green space for health research
Household, community, sub-national and country-level predictors of primary cooking fuel switching in nine countries from the Pure study
The importance of community and sub-national factors relative to household characteristics in determining polluting-to-clean fuel switching varied dramatically across the nine countries examined. This highlights the potential importance of national and other contextual factors in shaping large-scale clean cooking transitions among rural communities in low- and middle-income countries
Estimated Residential Exposure to Agricultural Chemicals and Premature Mortality by Parkinson’s Disease in Washington State
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between estimated residential exposure to agricultural chemical application and premature mortality from Parkinson's disease (PD) in Washington State. Washington State mortality records for 2011−2015 were geocoded using residential addresses, and classified as having exposure to agricultural land-use within 1000 meters. Generalized linear models were used to explore the association between lan…
Exploring pathways linking greenspace to health
Community-Engaged Attribute Mapping
HEAL MAPPSTM revealed differences in resource availability, accessibility, and affordability within and among rural communities, as well as in readiness to address the obesogenic context. Extension functioned successfully as the backbone organization, and local community health partner, cooperatively implementing HEAL MAPPSTM and engaging constituents in shaping weight healthy environments
Associations between multiple green space measures and birth weight across two US cities
Geographic variation in radon and associated lung cancer risk in Canada
Neighbourhood socioeconomic status and individual lung cancer risk
Sense of community-belonging and health-behaviour change in Canada
BACKGROUND: Research indicates that primary prevention targeting individual behaviours should incorporate contextual factors. The objectives of this study are to examine the role of community-belonging and contextual factors on health-behaviour change in Canada, and whether the influence of community-belonging on behaviour change varies by specific types of behaviours and contextual factors. METHODS: Data on individual-level community-belonging, …
Challenges to interdisciplinary training for junior space, place and health researchers
The complexity of research questions posed in space, place and health research has led some researchers to suggest that these questions cannot be addressed adequately through a single research discipline. The objective of this article is two-fold. First, we argue that junior researchers face distinct challenges in learning how to conduct interdisciplinary research. Second, we outline how a unique training experience, the Canadian Institutes of He…
Sense of community belonging” in health surveys
Exploring Variation and Predictors of Residential Fine Particulate Matter Infiltration
Although individuals spend the majority of their time indoors, most epidemiological studies estimate personal air pollution exposures based on outdoor levels. This almost certainly results in exposure misclassification as pollutant infiltration varies between homes. However, it is often not possible to collect detailed measures of infiltration for individual homes in large-scale epidemiological studies and thus there is currently a need to develo…
