Creative Self-Efficacy
In preparation for the future of work, developed economies face two critical challenges related to their STEM workforces. The first is the need to increase female participation, as women remain underrepresented in these disciplines. The second is the need, in a rapidly digitalizing world, to equip workers with abilities that cannot be easily replaced by artificial intelligence and automation.Could creativity be the solution to both challenges?Build…
Closing the loop by expanding the scope
“Closing the loop” in Learning Analytics (LA) requires an ongoing design and research effort to ensure that the technological innovation emerging from LA addresses the actual, pragmatic problems of educators in everyday learning environments. An approach to doing so explored in this paper is to design LA as a part of the human systems of activity within an educational environment, as opposed to conceptualising LA as a stand-alone system offering …
Empowering mathematics teachers to meet evolving educational goals
In recent decades, the aims and objectives of education – and therefore public discourse on the appropriate skills and attributes of mathematics teachers – have been rapidly shifting due to forces from outside the teaching profession. The forces driving change in mathematics are as diverse as the emergence of “Industry 4.0” and “STEM,” new directions in transnational education policy making, and the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper contributes to a …
The STEM Crisis and Teacher Practice
STEM has become a pervasive part of global education reform. The STEM discourse positions the purpose of scientific education as being to prepare young people for work in a hyper-competitive 21st century knowledge economy, pushing aside alternative approaches focussed on interrogating social, moral and political issues in context. This narrative does not always sit comfortably with the holistic ambitions of many state and faith-based education sy…
Partnered research and emergent variation
This paper responds to a growing literature arguing that change in higher education institutions might be better understood and managed if such institutions are understood as complex systems with emergent properties. Based on complexity theory, the paper articulates a set of characteristics that might be expected if institutions are in fact acting as complex systems. The utility of these characteristics for identifying complexity in the field is …
No time to think
In this study, we seek to illuminate the effects of the global policy convergence in education through a close study of its enactment within an Australian Teacher Education course. Building on an examination of the changing priorities of a cohort of pre-service teachers over a short space of time, we argue that the enactment of New Public Management approaches to the governance of teaching in Australia is having adverse effects on the professiona…
Performers and postulates
In this article we investigate the generative causes of variation in the professional identity of new teachers. Building on previous work that has shown a link between professional identity and socio-political context, we argue that the context experienced in late adolescence and early adulthood is particularly significant in shaping how beginning teachers think of themselves as teachers. This finding suggests that the linear response to neoliber…
Children's History
While conducting research intended to explore the underlying thoughts and assumptions held by non-Indigenous teachers and policy makers involved in Aboriginal education I dug out my first book on Australian history which had been given when I was about seven years old. Titled Australia From the Beginning(Pownall, 1980), the book was written for children and was not a scholarly book. It surprised me, then, to find so many of my own understandings …
