Open Access•Sheri D Weiser, Lila Aziz Sheira et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

INTRODUCTION: Interventions that address household-level factors, including food insecurity (FI) and poverty, may reduce HIV risk and improve sexual and reproductive health (SRH) among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). METHODS: (SM). SM was a multisectoral agricultural livelihood intervention designed to improve HIV health. • An in-depth interview study of women's perspectives on the effects of contraceptive use on future fertility in Ethiopia and Kenya

Open Access•Kristen Kirksey, Hanna Feleke et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2025

Infertility is a common perceived side effect of contraceptive use among women in sub-Saharan Africa, and fear of infertility can affect contraceptive choices. While no choice is inherently negative, it is critical that women have accurate information about side effects to ensure contraceptive decision-making agency. Despite the prevalence of infertility fears, little is known about women's specific beliefs, where they originate, and how they inf…

  • Women's Perspectives on the Unique Benefits and Challenges of Self‐Injectable Contraception

Open Access•Emily Himes, Lauren Suchman et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2024•References: 25

Implementing self‐injection (SI) of subcutaneous depot‐medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA‐SC) is a key self‐care strategy for sexual and reproductive health, but SI uptake remains low, and assertions about the potential of SI to increase women's control over contraceptive use lack evidence. We sought to qualitatively explore how women with diverse contraceptive experiences—including those with and without experience using SI—view the benefits and …

  • Analyzing fast and slow

    Open Access•Lauren Suchman, Elizabeth Omoluabi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Much of the methodological literature on rapid qualitative analysis describes processes used by a relatively small number of researchers focusing on one study site and using rapid analysis to replace a traditional analytical approach. In this paper, we describe the experiences of a transnational research consortium integrating both rapid and traditional qualitative analysis approaches to develop social theory while also informing program design. …

  • Comparing the effect of a multisectoral agricultural intervention on HIV-related health outcomes between widowed and married women

    Open Access•Jackline A Odhiambo, Sheri D Weiser et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2023•References: 33

Our study is among the first comparing the effect of a livelihood intervention on HIV health outcomes among widowed and married women. Widowed women experienced similar benefits as married women on individual-level outcomes, but weaker benefit on outcomes dependent on their external environment like enacted stigma and social support. Future trials and programs targeting widowed women should bolster stigma reduction and social support

  • The Impact of Land Tenure Security on a Livelihood Intervention for People Living with HIV in Western Kenya

    Open Access•Afkera K Daniel, Shari L Dworkin et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

  • Water Insecurity is Associated with Lack of Viral Suppression and Greater Odds of Aids-Defining Illnesses Among Adults with HIV in Western Kenya

    Open Access•Jason M Nagata, Joshua D Miller et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2021

Reliable access to safe and acceptable water in sufficient quantities (i.e., water security) is important for medication adherence and limiting pathogen exposure, yet prior studies have only considered the role of food security as a social determinant of HIV-related health. Therefore, the objective of this analysis was to assess the relationships between household water insecurity and HIV-related outcomes among adults living with HIV in western K…

  • Social Support Mitigates Negative Impact of Food Insecurity on Antiretroviral Adherence Among Postpartum Women in Western Kenya

Open Access•Mira Wang, Joshua D Miller et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2020

    Open Access•Jason M Nagata, Lynhea M Anicete et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2020

  • I know how stressful it is to lack water!’ Exploring the lived experiences of household water insecurity among pregnant and postpartum women in western Kenya

    Open Access•Shalean M Collins, Patrick M Owuor et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2018

There is rapidly evolving literature on water insecurity in the general adult population, but the role of water insecurity during the vulnerable periods of pregnancy and postpartum, or in the context of HIV, has been largely overlooked. Therefore, we conducted an exploratory study, using Go Along interviews, photo-elicitation interviews, and pile sorts with 40 pregnant and postpartum Kenyan women living in an area of high HIV prevalence. We sough…
