The contribution of primary care to health and health systems in low- and middle-income countries
The response to flexibility
Since December 2005 the GAVI Alliance (GAVI) Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) window has offered predictable funding to developing countries, based on a combined population and economic formula. The latter is fuelled by unreg…
Obstetrical interventions and health centre coverage
In this paper a spatial analysis of routine utilization data is used as a cheap and sensitive contribution to the overall evaluation of the health care delivery system. Routine data on major surgical interventions for complicated labour in a rural area in Eastern Zaire are analysed. Distance decay of intervention rates is marked for the rural population, but less so for areas covered by the health centre network. A coefficient of localization is …

Weight, height and arm circumference in 0 to 5 year‐old children from Kasongo (Zaire)
Means and centile distributions of weight‐for‐age, height‐for‐age, weight‐for‐height and arm circumference‐for‐age amongst under‐fives of both sexes in Kasongo, Zaire, are presented. More than 32,000 measurements of each of the three parameters were obtained in a semi‐longitudinal study. These data are compared with reference values and data from other African Countries. Key words: Nutritional surveyweightheightarm circumferenceunder‐fives Notes …
