Integrating portable air purifiers in German daycare centers during the Covid-19 pandemic – A qualitative exploration of usage, maintenance and impact on prevention behaviors
During the COVID-19 pandemic portable air purifiers with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters were suggested as a supplement to other prevention measures. Our previous study in German daycare centers did, however, not show a reduction in COVID-19 prevalence. The current study investigates possible reasons for the absence of preventive effects and examines confounding factors and particularities of the daycare setting. Prevention measure…
Climate-sensitive health counselling for Planetary Health
Healthcare professionals are in a unique societal position that enables them to act as change agents in the required transformation towards climate change mitigation and adaptation, through climate-sensitive health counselling (CSHC). As most studies on the topic come from high-income countries, we conducted a stakeholder workshop in Accra, Ghana, to adapt a framework to the local context. The climate crisis poses significant threats to human and …
Planetary Health policy? Persistence of modern concepts and pitfalls of implementation
Planetary Health and One Health as two related but distinct answers to the planetary crisis. Both proclaim a paradigm shift towards the interrelatedness of environment and health. We detail some persistent pitfalls undermining this paradigm shift
Contamination Landscapes
Nosocomial outbreaks require quick epidemiological clarification of possible chains of infection, since the pathogen usually has a head start that has to be caught up. Identification of people and areas at risk is crucial for efficient confinement. This paper describes a concept which can be applied to healthcare settings. The application skips the time-consuming and imperfect reconstruction of direct and indirect contacts. Indoor mobility of peo…
The Regeneration of Urban Blue Spaces
Research in recent years has demonstrated that urban surface waters (“urban blue spaces”) can provide beneficial effects on human health and wellbeing. Despite blue spaces prevailing on urban development agendas across the world, little investigation has been done whether and how the regeneration of such spaces is used as a (community-based) public health intervention. Therefore, a review was conducted to analyze urban blue space regeneration pro…
Coping with ill-health while lacking access to health care
BACKGROUND: Large parts of Malawi`s population lack access to health care. A high burden of disease, chronic poverty, and a growing population accelerate the need for extending and improving health care. One region that is struggling with service provision is Malawi ́s rural district Phalombe. In addition to adequate resources, acceptability of service provision and productive patient-provider engagements are crucial determinants of health-seekin…

Heat Perception and Coping Strategies
The transdisciplinary project "Heat-Health Action Plan for Elderly People in Cologne" addresses the most heat-vulnerable risk group, people over 65 years of age. A quantitative study aimed to better understand heat perception and coping strategies of elderly people during heat waves to inform heat-health action plans. We conducted a representative quantitative survey via structured interviews with 258 randomly chosen people over 65 years old, liv…
Influence of human-surface water interactions on the transmission of urinary schistosomiasis in the Lower Densu River basin, Ghana
Male children have higher exposure to urinary schistosomiasis than females. • Children of 13 years and above have higher odds of urinay schistosomiasis. • Recreational, domestic and occupational water-contacts have higher odds ratios. • More frequent and longer water-contacts contributed to high odds of blood in urine
Academic Greenspace and Well-Being — Can Campus Landscape be Therapeutic? Evidence from a German University
This paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of green spaces as health-promoting campus environments. Our study of a campus green space at the University of Bonn, Germany, is one of the first attempts to quantify health-promoting effects of Academic Greenspace among students, adding to our understanding of how green spaces can serve as everyday therapeutic landscapes. We take a closer look at the interlinkages between students’ perceptions o…
Protocol for a Trial Assessing the Impacts of School-Based WaSH Interventions on Children’s Health Literacy, Handwashing, and Nutrition Status in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Diarrhea, soil-transmitted helminth infection and malnutrition are leading causes of child mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To reduce the prevalence of these diseases, effective interventions for adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) should be implemented. This paper describes the design of a cluster-randomized controlled trial that will compare the efficacy of four school-based WaSH interventions for improving chil…
Coping with ill-health
BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan African wetlands, settlement areas to growing populations, expose their users to diseases as necessary health infrastructure remains underdeveloped. METHODS: Mixed methods were adopted to assess the health-seeking behaviour of different exposure groups (farmers, pastoralists, service sector workers) in a Kenyan wetland community. Based on a cross-sectional survey (n = 400), syndromic surveillance was linked to health-seeki…

The impact of flooding on people living with HIV
BACKGROUND: Floods are a disaster situation for all affected populations and especially for vulnerable groups within communities such as children, orphans, women, and people with chronic diseases such as HIV and AIDS. They need functioning health care, sanitation and hygiene, safe water, and healthy food supply, and are critically dependent on their social care and support networks. A study carried out in the Ohangwena region, Namibia, where HIV …

city. The meta-analysis suggested that a cooling effect of 2.5 K (CI 95% 1.9-3.2 K, p<0.01) during the warmest months on northern hemisphere (between May and October) can be attributed to urban blue sites when including remote sensing data. However, research on the air temperature effects of urban blue space remains sparse compared to studies on urban green. The cooling effects clearly attributable to urban blue space are limited by surrounding e…
