Awareness, acceptance, and impact of undetectable equals untransmittable (U = U) among people living with HIV across Canada
Undetectable equals Untransmittable (U = U) is a pivotal tool for HIV prevention, stigma reduction, and improving quality of life for people living with HIV. This study examined awareness, acceptance, and impact of U = U among people living with HIV across Canada, and explored differences across sociodemographic characteristics. From 2018-2024, 1,083 participants were recruited in-person and online using snowball sampling. Peer researchers conduc…
The impact of determinants of health on the relationship between stigma and health in people living with HIV
Determinants of health are important drivers of health states, yet there is little work examining their role in the relationship between HIV stigma and health. This study uses moderation analysis to examine how determinants of health affect the relationship between enacted, internalized, and anticipated stigma and mental health. Quantitative data was collected on 337 participants in Ontario, Canada at baseline (t1) between August 2018 and Septemb…
The Role of Dimensions of Social Support in the Relationship Between Stigma and Mental Health
The cost of anticipating stigma
Levels of HIV stigma remain high, however there is a limited understanding around how different types of stigma interact to impact health. This study uses data from two time points to examine how enacted and internalized stigma lead to worse health through anticipated stigma as a mediator. We recruited 341 participants in Ontario, Canada to complete the HIV Stigma Index survey at baseline (t1) from September 2018 to August 2019 and follow up (t2)…
Help-Seeking to Cope With Experiences of Violence Among Women Living With HIV in Canada
Using baseline data from a community-collaborative cohort of women living with HIV in Canada, we assessed the prevalence and correlates of help-seeking among 1,057 women who reported experiencing violence in adulthood (≥16 years). After violence, 447 (42%) sought help, while 610 (58%) did not. Frequently accessed supports included health care providers ( n = 313, 70%), family/friends ( n = 244, 55%), and non-HIV community organizations ( n = 235,…
Adapting stigma mechanism frameworks to explore complex pathways between intersectional stigma and HIV-related health outcomes among women living with HIV in Canada
Intersectional stigma research examining pathways to HIV outcomes is limited. • Adapted conceptual frameworks to examine intersectional stigma and health outcomes. • Stigma interacted with social/institutional support to increase depression. • Depression led to maladaptive coping, lowering adherence and CD4 count. • Argues for multi-level strategies, including women-centred HIV care
