  • Well-Being, Time Use, and Women's Empowerment after Couple Separation

    Open Access•Marisa Bucheli, Andrea Vigorito•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2026

Although many studies have assessed the effects of union dissolution on access to economic resources, few have analyzed changes in other domains of women’s quality of life that might be affected when couple separation occurs in households with small children. This study analyzes the effects of union dissolution on economic and subjective well-being, time use and household workload, empowerment, and attitudes toward gender norms among custodial mo…

  • The disparate evolution of multidimensional poverty, vulnerability, and horizontal inequalities in Uruguay

Alina Machado, Andrea Vigorito•ARTICLE•Oxford Development Studies•2025

There is an ongoing discussion on the extent and limits of the decrease in deprivation and inequality experienced by Latin American countries in the period before the COVID-19 pandemic. To contribute to this debate, we carry out a multidimensional analysis of the evolution of poverty, vulnerability to poverty, and horizontal inequalities among the Uruguayan adult population between 2006 and 2018. Based on the results of a previous consultation pr…

  • Visible Consumption, Income Inequality and Social Comparisons. Evidence from Four Latin American Countries

Rodrigo Gorga, Martin Leite et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2024

Increased conspicuous consumption motivated by status-seeking behavior can undermine the gains in well-being derived from economic growth. Using expenditure surveys from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay, we assess visible consumption motivated by status seeking behaviour, analyzing different hypotheses about the role of externalities driven by social comparisons and income inequality. Specifically, we provide evidence for the relevance of di…

  • Visible goods, personality traits and preferences for status

    Open Access•Martin Leite, Gonzalo Salas et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Desarrollo y Sociedad•2024•References: 4

The identification of positional goods is crucial for understanding how social interactions motivate consumption decisions. Drawing on micro-data from the Estudio Longitudinal del Bienestar en Uruguay (ELBU), we identify a list of visible goods and assess whether their visibility varies according to respondents’ characteristics. We find that expenditure on automobiles, jewelry and watches, clothing, and personal care rank at the top of the scale.…

  • The challenge of income inequality in Latin America

Economic Commission For Latin America And The Caribbean, Amarante et al.•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2023

Seventy-five years after the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) was founded, reducing the concentration of income and wealth remains one of the key challenges in Latin America. This article firstly reviews the contributions made by ECLAC and Latin American structuralism to the analysis and measurement of the income distribution. It then describes the main trends of inequality in the region from 1990 to the present, an…

  • Short- and Medium-Term Effects of Parental Separation on Children's Well-Being

    Open Access•Marisa Bucheli, Andrea Vigorito•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2023•References: 38

There is limited quantitative research on the effect of parental union dissolution on children's well-being in developing countries. We use three waves of an Uruguayan longitudinal study that follows a cohort of first graders at public primary schools in 2004 to study the short-term (at age 13) and medium-term (at age 19) effects of parental separation on school attendance, grade repetition, completed years of schooling, socioemotional status, ti…

  • Emigration and Economic Crisis

    Open Access•Adela Pellegrino, Andrea Vigorito•ARTICLE•Migraciones internacionales•2017

Uruguay is one of the South American countries with a significant proportion of population living abroad. Since the 1970s, it has had net emigration. Although this trend weakened considerably in the early 1990s, the momentum was regained with the advent of a severe economic crisis in 1999. This article discusses the characteristics of recent Uruguayan emigration, and it provides evidence of the relationship between economic crisis and emigration.…

  • Government Transfers and Political Support

Marco Manacorda, Edward Miguel et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Journal Applied…•2011

This paper estimates the impact of a large anti-poverty cash transfer program, the Uruguayan PANES, on political support for the government that implemented it. Using the discontinuity in program assignment based on a pretreatment eligibility score, we find that beneficiary households are 11 to 13 percentage points more likely to favor the current government relative to the previous government. Political support effects persist after the program …

This article aims at contributing to the debate on the effectiveness of cash transfers in terms of income inequality variations at the national and regional level, in middle-income countries like Uruguay. We microsimulate how targeting criteria affect impacts on school attendance, income inequality and poverty of the recently incepted cash transfer programme Asignaciones Familiares. Our results show that inequality tends to persist although progr…

Sen’s capability approach considers that the main goal of the development process is the expansion of individual and social achievements in a wide set of dimensions (Alkire, 2002). Based in this perspective, in the early years of the 1990 decade, UNDP launched the Human Development Index (HDI) to reflect, monitor and rank countries.
