Assessing the economic cost of road traffic crashes in Saudi Arabia
Objective: This study aimed to (1) assess the direct and indirect economic cost associated with road traffic crashes (RTCs) in Saudi Arabia in 2022; and (2) estimate the potential economic savings associated with scaling up the full implementation of three priority road traffic safety interventions (i.e., speed limit enforcement, seat belt enforcement, and a graduated licensing system for new drivers). Methods: A cost-of-illness approach was used…
Use of a pathogen X tabletop exercise to assess the operational response preparedness of an emerging infectious diseases research network
In mid-2020, the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID) Network was established to address critical gaps in research expertise and capacity in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases (EIDs). As the Network was established during the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the Network’s research centers initially focused on SARS-CoV-2 research. By the end of 2021, the Network leadership realized that it had a blind spot with regards …
Importance of outbreak response research in bridging knowledge gaps on emerging infectious diseases
An important outcome of the devastating 2014 West African Ebola virus disease outbreak and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has been the growing promotion of conducting research during outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) as a valuable and acceptable process of acquiring knowledge to enhance our ability to better prevent and control these diseases in the future. Recognising the unique opportunity during outbreaks to leverage increases in ca…
Testing the feasibility and utility of an executive function battery for use with primary school-aged students in Malawi
There is increasing evidence that malaria impacts student educational outcomes, in part through impairments in cognitive function. Currently, there is no consensus with regards to standardized tools or approaches to assess the extent and magnitude of this association. We conducted a pilot study to assess the feasibility and utility of a well-established tablet-based battery of executive function (EF) tasks for primary school-aged children in Mala…
Malaria trends in districts that were targeted and not-targeted for seasonal malaria chemoprevention in children under 5 years of age in Guinea, 2014–2021
BACKGROUND: Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) is a main intervention to prevent and reduce childhood malaria. Since 2015, Guinea has implemented SMC targeting children aged 3-59 months (CU5) in districts with high and seasonal malaria transmission. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the programmatic impact of SMC in Guinea's context of scaled up malaria intervention programming by comparing malaria-related outcomes in 14 districts that had or had not be…
How well do coverage surveys and programmatically reported mass drug administration coverage match? Results from 214 mass drug administration campaigns in 15 countries, 2008–2017
INTRODUCTION: Delivering preventive chemotherapy through mass drug administration (MDA) is a central approach in controlling or eliminating several neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Treatment coverage, a primary indicator of MDA performance, can be measured through routinely reported programmatic data or population-based coverage evaluation surveys. Reported coverage is often the easiest and least expensive way to estimate coverage; however, it…
Spatiotemporal dynamics of malaria in Zanzibar, 2015–2020
BACKGROUND: Despite high coverage of malaria interventions, malaria elimination in Zanzibar remains elusive, with the annual number of cases increasing gradually over the last 3 years. OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study were to (1) assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of malaria in Zanzibar between 2015 and 2020 and (2) identify malaria hotspots that would allow Zanzibar to develop an epidemiological stratification for more effective and granular int…
The usefulness of school-based syndromic surveillance for detecting malaria epidemics
School absenteeism is a plausible simple indicator of unusual health events within a community, such as malaria epidemics, but the sensitivity of an absenteeism-based surveillance system to detect epidemics could not be rigorously evaluated in this study. Further piloting during a demonstrated increase in malaria transmission within a community is recommended
The epidemiology and control of leishmaniasis in Andean countries
This paper reviews the current knowledge of leishmaniasis epidemiology in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. In all 5 countries leishmaniasis is endemic in both the Andean highlands and the Amazon basin. The sandfly vectors belong to subgenera Helcocyrtomyia, Nyssomiya, Lutzomyia, and Psychodopygus, and the Verrucarum group. Most human infections are caused by Leishmania in the Viannia subgenus. Human Leishmania infections cause cut…
