  • Collusion in the Clinic

    Open Access•Ashley Tate, T Stivers•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2025•References: 39

American healthcare involves expanding medical technologies and innovations in treatment to improve health outcomes and longevity. Social scientists have argued that this is explained by the moralization of health and cultural attitudes toward imperatives to treat, pointing to the U.S. healthcare system as one that rewards healthy behaviors and "curing" rather than "caring." In this article, we analyze early-stage oncology encounters to understan…

Open Access•Ashley Tate, Karen Lutfey Spencer•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 62

Doctors (and sociologists) have a long history of struggling to understand why patients seek medical help yet resist treatment recommendations. Explanations for resistance have pointed to macrostructural changes, such as the rise of the engaged patient or decline of physician authority. Rather than assuming that concepts such as resistance, authority, or engagement are exogenous phenomena transmitted via conversational conduits, we examine how th…

  • The Role of Health Care Communication in Treatment Outcomes

    Open Access•T Stivers, Ashley Tate•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Linguistics•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 29

The physician-patient relationship has evolved significantly in the past century. Physician authority has been reduced while patients have been empowered. This review focuses on face-to-face clinical care and argues that current physician-patient relations range from partnerships between social actors who each play critical roles in negotiating care to a more adversarial duel in which both participants advocate for goals that are not necessarily …

    Open Access•Ashley Tate•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 43

  • Evaluation of Rapid Testing Algorithms for Venue-based Anonymous HIV Testing among Non-HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men, National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS), 2017

Open Access•Shamaya Whitby, Amanda Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Health•2020

HIV rapid testing algorithms (RTAs) using any two orthogonal rapid tests (RTs) allow for on-site confirmation of infection. RTs vary in performance characteristics therefore the selection of RTs in an algorithm may affect identification of infection, particularly if acute. National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) assessed RTAs among men who have sex with men recruited using anonymous venue-based sampling. Different algorithms were evaluated am…

    Open Access•Ashley Tate•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Mental health disorders face less stigma today than in the past, yet they continue to be misdiagnosed and at times improperly treated. One account for this problem is that physicians rely exclusively on a verbal interview of patients for diagnosis. Because this diagnostic method is likely to be shaped by the way patients present their symptoms, it is critical that we examine whether and how patients' communication practices shape diagnostic and t…

  • Racial/Ethnic Disparities in HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Among Men Who Have Sex with Men — 23 Urban Areas, 2017
