  • Peak event

    Open Access•Marguerite Müller, Martin Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Management•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 26

This paper tracks the growth of two of the largest tourist events: the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup, drawing on a dataset containing all events between 1964 and 2018. Overall, the size of the three events has grown about 60-fold over the past 50 years, thirteen times faster than world GDP. We identify an S-shaped growth curve and four different growth periods, with an emergent crisis phase in the late 2010s that may have brought us to…

  • The mega-events database

    Marguerite Müller, D Wolfe et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 33

Although events such as the Olympic Games and World’s Fairs are among the largest of mega-projects, there is little systematic data to evaluate their outcomes over a longer period of time and across multiple sites. This research note describes the first longitudinal database on mega-event outcomes. It lays out the rationale and major goals of the database, its methodological approach and content, and its challenges and limitations. The database a…

  • Can We Blame it on Rio

    Open Access•C Gaffney•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 28

The Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games were the last major sporting event in a decade-long cycle in the Brazilian metropolis. In the years leading up to the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the city's urban planning agenda was captured by the exogenous demands of hosting the quadrennial spectacular. This capture has exacerbated four tendencies that will pertain in Rio de Janeiro for the foreseeable future: consolidation of consumer sovereignty, restructu…

  • Comparing the Urban Impacts of the Fifa World Cup and Olympic Games From 2010 to 2016

    Open Access•Marguerite Müller, C Gaffney•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•2018•Cited by: 23•References: 7

At a cost of often more than US$10 billion, mega-events such as the Olympic Games and the FIFA Men's World Cup are the single most transformative urban project in many host cities for decades. This article develops an analytical matrix for comparing the impacts of these events on cities and proposes a case survey method to apply this matrix to six recent sports mega-events: the Olympic Games in Vancouver, London, Sochi, and Rio de Janeiro and the…

  • Negotiating 'New' Narratives

Open Access•Kyle Bailey, Robert Oliver et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•2017•Cited by: 12•References: 29

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is currently in the midst of an extraordinary period of mega-event hosting. While a large number of articles have been keen to illustrate the transformative potential and dilemmas of utilizing mega-events to advance an urban agenda, less understood is the role that media play in the construction of the 'media geography' of mega-events. This research examines the collective narratives crafted by five Western international n…

  • Smarter than Smart

    C Gaffney, Cerianne Robertson•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Technology•2016

“Smart cities” grew out of the realization that North American models of suburban development and central business district decline needed to be challenged with new paradigms. This movement began in the 1990s with ideas centered on smart growth and new urbanism. While initially restricted to small, wealthy cities, the ideas that emerged during this period combined with a vertiginous growth in information technologies to create software-driven urb…

  • Olympic Transport Legacies

    Open Access•Eva Kassens-Noor, C Gaffney et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2016•Cited by: 12•References: 4

Since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) selected Rio de Janeiro to host the 2016 Olympic Games, large-scale transportation infrastructures have been transforming the city. We examine the transportation planning process and consequences of implementation in the run-up to the 2016 Olympic Games by triangulating qualitative and quantitative methods. We argue that because of the low cost, speed of implementation, best-practice knowledge, exis…

  • Gentrifications in pre-Olympic Rio de Janeiro

    C Gaffney•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•2015•Cited by: 74•References: 3

The highly variable residential landscapes of Rio de Janeiro are changing rapidly in response to intersecting vectors: a cycle of global mega-events that has accelerated real estate speculation, the occupation of strategic favelas by state military police, and the implementation of state-led urban development projects. The general trend has been toward an increase in rents across the metropolitan region with an identifiable process of gentrificat…

  • Virando o jogo

    Open Access•C Gaffney•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 17

The progressive commercialization of football in Brazil has been accompanied by the emergence of social movements that seek increased visibility and power over decision-making processes in the sport industrial complex. These groups are responding to rapid changes in the political economy of Brazilian sport, particularly football. While many of these processes were well underway before FIFA selected Brazil to host the 2014 World Cup in 2007, the e…

  • Mega-events and socio-spatial dynamics in Rio de Janeiro, 1919-2016

    C Gaffney•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American geography•2010

This article examines the ways in which discourses of urban development and socio-spatial discipline are wrapped around infrastructure development projects associated with recent, future, and proposed international mega-events in Rio de Janeiro. In the past few years the city and state governments of Rio de Janeiro invested billions of dollars in sporting, tourist, transportation and security infrastructures for the 2007 Pan American Games and hu…

  • Food-borne outbreak of Giardia lamblia

    John D Porter, C Gaffney et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•References: 3

An outbreak of giardiasis occurred following a family party for 25 persons. Nine who had eaten fruit salad became ill, compared with one who had not eaten the salad (Relative Risk = 7.4, 95% CI = 1.4, 169.3). The fruit salad preparer had a diapered child and a pet rabbit at home who were both positive for Giardia lamblia. This outbreak emphasizes the importance of good hygienic practices in food preparation and the possibility of domestic-animal-…
