Gender Gaps in Total Factor Productivity
This paper provides evidence on the relative productivity differences between women-owned and men-owned firms in a developing country. We rely on data from a survey of small and medium manufacturing firms in the main industrial hubs of Ghana. We apply unconditional quantile regression and decomposition techniques to estimate the productivity gap between men- and women-owned firms and identify the contributions to the gap at the mean and selected …
Risk Attitudes and Sources of Finance
Several theories in economics and finance suggest that risk attitudes play a vital role in economic choices, including being an entrepreneur and the choice of finance for businesses. However, there are limited empirical tests of these theories in the African context, where majority of firms are small and medium-scale enterprises. Using the 7th round of the Ghana Living Standards Survey (GLSS 7), this study estimates the effect of risk attitudes o…
Who pays more? Exploring cost disparities in medication abortion access across socio-demographic groups in Ghana
MA cost in Ghana is largely based on providers' discretion and at the facility's management level. Additionally, the cost differs by women's socio-demographic attributes. To reduce the disparities in MA costs, developing guidelines to address the health system challenges regarding MA provision and access is important. Educational programs on MA access, provision and legal framework could also reduce abortion-related stigma and cost variations
Risk attitudes and asset diversification
Attitudes toward risk influence an individual's decision‐making with significant implications for economic outcomes and yet there is limited understanding of the relationship between risk attitude and economic decision‐making in developing countries. This paper estimates the influence of risk aversion on asset diversification using data from a large nationally representative sample of Ghanaian households. The results show weak association between…
Impact of Covid‐19 on Maternal Health Seeking in Ghana
The Covid‐19 pandemic is widely speculated to have disrupted the delivery of primary health care in low‐income countries. Yet, there is little rigorous empirical research identifying this effect. This paper estimates the impact of Covid‐19 on facility and skilled delivery and utilisation of antenatal care (ANC) services by comparing these outcomes for women who were pregnant/delivered before and during the Covid‐19 period. The results show that C…

The Impacts of Extreme Weather Events on Inflation and the Implications for Monetary Policy in Africa
Economic debates around mitigating climate change and weather-related events have long centred on fiscal policy tools than those of monetary policy. However, recent discussions point out that monetary policy formulation could also be affected and hence the need to deploy monetary policy tools as well. Our article seeks to investigate the impacts of climate change, particularly extreme weather events, on headline inflation and food price inflation…
The impact of a personalized, community-based counselling and referral programme on modern contraceptive use in urban Ghana
Community-based demand-generation family planning programmes have been associated with increased contraceptive use in rural areas of Ghana. However, rigorous evaluations of such programmes in urban contexts are lacking. We used a retrospective, cross-sectional with comparison group design to estimate the immediate and sustained impact of the Willows intervention on modern contraceptive use in Kumasi, Ghana. The Willows intervention is a home-base…
Dynamics of Emergency Contraceptive Use in Accra, Ghana
Recent data suggest increasing rates of emergency contraception (EC) use in Ghana, particularly in urban areas. In 2018, we collected survey data from 3,703 sexually experienced women aged 16–44 years living in low‐income settlements of Accra. We estimated the prevalence of lifetime and current EC use. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with current use of EC. Retrospective monthly calendar data on contraceptiv…

Cost-benefit analysis of water source improvements through borehole drilling or rehabilitation
BACKGROUND: Despite remarkable progress in water coverage improvements, diseases associated with poor water remain a considerable public health problem in many developing countries. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate the costs and benefits of drilling or rehabilitating boreholes with handpumps in resource-poor settings and hard-to-reach areas. METHODS: Diarrheal reduction in the population was predicted on the basis of the empirical findings from a …
Does the provision of community health services offset the effects of poverty and low maternal educational attainment on childhood mortality? An analysis of the equity effect of the Navrongo experimen…
The Government of Ghana has instituted a National Poverty Reduction Program with an initiative known as the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) as its core health development strategy. CHPS was derived from a plausibility trial of the Navrongo Health Research Centre testing four contrasting primary health care strategies: i) Training unpaid volunteers to promote health in communities, ii) placing nurses in communities with trainin…
Child Wanted and When? Fertility Intentions, Wantedness, and Child Survival in Rural Northern Ghana
Panel survey data collected in rural northern Ghana asked women about the “wantedness” status of their children. Parous women were asked whether they wanted more children, while those who had never had a child were asked whether they wanted to have children in the future; those who said that they did not want to have any more children in the future were asked whether they wanted to become pregnant when they last became pregnant and, if so, whethe…
