Planning Models of the Bronze Age Settlements (Based on the Results of Research in the Karagaily-Ayat River Valley, Southern Trans-Urals)
The article considers the layout models of the Bronze Age settlements in the Southern Trans-Urals. A part of the Karagaily-Ayat River valley was chosen as a scientific ground, where during the past two decades six sites containing materials of the Abashevo, Sintashta, Petrovka, Srubnaya (Srub- no-Alakul’ variant) and Cherkaskul’ cultures have been studied through excavations and/or non- destructive methods. The obtained radiocarbon dates cover th…
The Geochemistry of Unalloyed Copper Metallurgical Group Indicates Copper Ore Sources in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of the Urals
The Geochemistry of Unalloyed Copper Metallurgical Group Indicates Copper Ore Sources in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of the Urals
Trace elements in copper artifacts from Late Bronze and Early Iron Age sites in the Urals, formerly attributed to the metallurgical group of “chemically pure” copper, were analyzed using the method of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The metal of which artifacts included in this group are made reveals geochemical markers suggesting that “pure” copper actually falls into several subgroups. The PCA analysis of the result…
Seasonality of Sintashta Funerary Rites (Based on the Kamennyi Ambar-5 Bronze Age Cemetery)
Based on archaeological materials from the Kamennyi Ambar-5 cemetery, we test the hypothesis about the connection between the seasonality of pastoral practices and funerary rites during the Late Bronze Age (early 2nd millennium BC). We studied growth layers in the teeth of 24 cows, 19 sheep/goats, 14 horses, a dog, and ten humans from 17 graves. We combined samples from various species from the same contexts into eight assemblages. With regard to…
Climatic Factor in the Origin of the Sintashta Culture
The article deals with the problem of the appearance of the Sintashta architecture in the South Trans-Urals in the context of climatic events of the 3rd millennium BC. In terms of the main parameters: structure and layout (the presence of fences, close cluster planning), the Sintashta settlements fit into the Anatolian and Balkan-Carpathian traditions, although their specific incarnations depended on local conditions and resources. This circumsta…
Metallurgical Slags and Ore Fragments from the Kamenny Ambar Bronze Age Settlement (Southern Urals)
The paper presents the characteristics of metallurgical slags and copper ore fragments from the Kamenny Ambar settlement of the Bronze Age. According to the mineral and chemical compositions we have distinguished two types of the slags: Cr-rich spinel containing olivine slags and sulfide-containing olivine slags. The Cr-rich spinel containing olivine slags are the product of oxidized ore from the copper deposits in ultramafic rocks exploited in t…
The Settlement of Konoplyanka 2 in the Southern Trans-Urals
The article presents preliminary results of the study of the Bronze Age settlement Konoplyanka 2 in the valley of the Karagaily-Ayat River (Kartaly district of the Chelyabinsk region). The materials demonstrate the manifestations of mobility that occurred in different chronological periods of the Late Bronze Age. Topical problems such as the existence of open villages in the South Trans-Urals in Sintashta time and the features of post-Sintashta a…
Wells as a Source of Cultural and Chronological Information
Wells as a Source of Cultural and Chronological Information
This article presents 44 radiocarbon dates from 18 water wells of different Bronze Age periods at Kamennyi Ambar settlement, in the southern Trans-Urals. At the preliminary stage, statistical outliers were identified, which enhanced the reliability of the conclusions. Potsherds from the filling of the wells, contextual analysis of dating samples, and 14C dates allowed us to carry out the cultural attribution of nearly all wells (31 out of 34). Th…
Woodworking in the Bronze Age Southern Trans-Urals (the case study of the fortified settlement of Kamenny Ambar)
The paper presents the description and analysis of the collection of wood (formwork elements and objects) from wells of the Bronze Age fortified settlement of Kamenny Ambar (Chelyabinsk Oblast). Within the settlement, presented are the layers of the Sintashta, Petrovka and Srubnaya-Alakul traditions, covering the period of the 21st-17th c. BC. We give a short description of the forest resources of the study area. In Southern Urals, wood can be fo…
Europe to Asia
This chapter surveys cultural developments in the European part of the Russian Federation. Geographically this landscape varies from coniferous forests in the north, to steppe and semi-desert in the south, the Urals forming a natural eastern border to Europe. Chronologically the chapter covers the period from 900/800 BC through to the Great Migration of the third/fourth centuries AD. Although the pace of technological advance varied in different …

Complex Societies of Central Eurasia from the 3d to the 1st Millennia b.c
Social Trends in Temperate Eurasia During the Second and First Millennia BC
This paper outlines some basic trends of social evolution and devolution that occurred in Central Eurasia mostly in the second and first millennia BC. These main long-term, cyclical regularities were characteristic for the whole Eurasian territory and comprised the alternation between complex social structures and simple, extensive lifeways. The factors stimulating social development were ecological and technological crises, which conditioned a s…
