On Track or Off Track? Identifying a Typology of Math Course-Taking Sequences in U.S. High Schools
The authors examine students’ linear progression histories in mathematics throughout high school years, using the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. Although scholars have attended to this before, the authors provide a new organizing framework for thousands of heterogenous mathematics course-taking sequences. Using cluster analysis, the authors identify eight distinctive course-taking sequence typologies. Approximately 45 percent of students…
Intersecting capitals
We explore how Black and Latino/a students from economically marginalized communities drew upon dominant capitals accrued by virtue of attendance at elite secondary schools in conjunction with non-dominant family and community capitals to chart their postsecondary lives through college and beyond. In so doing, we point to affordances offered by the authors' longitudinal qualitative research investigation, as we work to understand individual and c…
The objective of this article is to analyze the debate on the relationship between extractive industries and sustainable development during the last cycle of privatization-nationalization of mining governance in Latin America (1990-2015) and, particularly, during the international mining boom of 2000-2013 and its resumption after 2014. The two elements of the study (extractive industries and sustainable development) actually correspond to large-s…
Postdevelopment’s forgotten ‘other roots’ in the Spanish and Latin American history of development thought
This chapter aims at re-discovering a piece of the Spanish and Latin American contribution to the history of ideas that influenced the theoretical construction of postdevelopment prior to Escobar’s conceptualisation during the 1990s. Specifically, the text focuses on two theoretical approaches, human and ecological development theorised by Spanish economist José Luis Sampedro (1979 , 1982a , 1982b , 1982c ), and human-scale development, as propos…
Recursos naturales, medio ambiente y sostenibilidad
Buen Vivir
In this article, we trace the avatars of the official concept of Buen Vivir (Good Living), and its understanding and translation as Sumak Kausay in the new Constitution of Ecuador, where it was converted from a subaltern concept that emerged in the 1990s to the country’s trademark. Our main hypothesis is that although Buen Vivir may be described as a social phenomenon in some specific social contexts (such as among Amazonian Sarayaku indigenous c…
Ecuador's Buen vivir
The concept of buen vivir (good living) has attracted interest far beyond its source in the Andean ethnic tradition. It is being debated internationally as a contribution to development theory and has become the fundamental purpose of Ecuador's policy since the adoption of the new constitution in 2008. There are, however, deep contradictions between the constitutional prescriptions and spirit of buen vivir and recently formulated policies that re…
In the Guise of STEM Education Reform
In this article, we present findings from a three-year comparative longitudinal and ethnographic study of how schools in two cities, Buffalo and Denver, have taken up STEM education reform, including the idea of “inclusive STEM-focused schools,” to address weaknesses in urban high schools with majority low-income and minority students. Although introduced with great fanfare, the data indicate that well-meaning efforts toward expanding opportuniti…
