  • Postclassic political conflict and isotope analysis in the central Peten lakes area, Guatemala

    Open Access•P M Rice, Andrew Sharpe et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2025•References: 37

Isotopes of strontium, oxygen, and carbon were analyzed in human tooth enamel from two Postclassic sites in the central Peten lakes region, Guatemala, to examine patterns of mobility and diet during a time of social unrest. Excavations at both sites, Ixlu and Zacpeten, have revealed evidence for purposeful dismemberment and interment of individuals. This study examines a possible shrine surrounded by rows of skulls at Ixlu, and a mass grave of co…

  • Embodied Places

Matthew C Velasco, George Kamenov et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2024

Bioarchaeologists routinely use isotopic data to classify the geographic origin of skeletal individuals as “local” or “nonlocal” using statistical criteria or comparative baselines. Yet, these analyses and resulting interpretations rarely consider how people in the past may have conceived of their relationships to different places. Using a case study from the late pre-Hispanic Colca Valley, Peru (A.D. 1300–1450), this article demonstrates how And…

  • Comparison of human and faunal enamel isotopes reveals diverse paleodiet and exchange patterns at the highland Maya Site of Kaminaljuyu, Guatemala

    Open Access•Andrew Sharpe, Bárbara Arroyo et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 81

This study provides an isotopic examination of both human and animal paleodiets and mobility patterns at a highland Maya community. Kaminaljuyu, Guatemala, was a large Prehispanic center located in a distinctly cooler, drier setting compared with the majority of Maya sites in the surrounding lowlands. Previous archaeological research at Kaminaljuyu revealed it played an important political and economic role in the Maya region, assisting in the ob…

  • Non-Local Enemies or Local Subjects of Violence

    Open Access•Beth K Scaffidi, George Kamenov et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 30

Throughout much of the pre-Hispanic Andes, bioarchaeological and iconographic evidence shows that the decapitation, dismemberment, and display of human heads were important aspects of ritual practices. Researchers have debated about the social identities of these decapitated heads-were they revered local ancestors, non-local enemies captured in raids or war, or locals injured in distant combat partially repatriated for home burial-answers which h…

  • Georeferencing a Cold Case Victim With Lead, Strontium, Carbon, and Oxygen Isotopes

    Open Access•George Kamenov, George D Kamenov et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Anthropological Practice•2014•References: 10

Two men walking across a bridge along highway I-75 found a young woman's body floating in the water below. This 1971 case has since become known as the "Little Miss Panasofkee" case. It is still an open homicide, for which neither the victim nor the perpetrator have been identified. Throughout the United States, thousands of similar cases remain open. The medicolegal communities work on these cases, as the years pass, applying new scientific meth…
