The associations between intergenerational mobility of income and cognitive function in midlife-The Young Finns Study
Individuals with stable high income may have better midlife cognitive function. This finding highlights the role of life-course SES for disparities in adulthood cognitive function. Understanding the role of early-life determinants of midlife cognitive function is important, as this knowledge may be applied to the early promotion of adulthood cognitive health
Identification of gene networks jointly associated with depressive symptoms and cardiovascular health metrics using whole blood transcriptome in the Young Finns Study
The identified gene module and its members can provide new joint biomarkers for depression and CVH
Does better education mitigate risky health behavior? A mendelian randomization study
Education and risky health behaviors are strongly negatively correlated. Education may affect health behaviors by enabling healthier choices through higher disposable income, increasing information about the harmful effects of risky health behaviors, or altering time preferences. Alternatively, the observed negative correlation may stem from reverse causality or unobserved confounders. Based on the data from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns…
Temperament profiles are associated with dietary behavior from childhood to adulthood
Smoking and Physical Activity Trajectories from Childhood to Midlife
Introduction: Despite substantial interest in the development of health behaviors, there is limited research that has examined the longitudinal relationship between physical activity (PA) and smoking trajectories from youth to adulthood in a Finnish population. This study aimed to identify trajectories of smoking and PA for males and females, and study the relationship between these trajectories from youth to adulthood. Methods: Latent profile an…
Changes in Daily Steps and Body Mass Index and Waist to Height Ratio during Four Year Follow-Up in Adults
Aims: Over the study years, there was a significant increase in body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WtHR) in middle aged Finnish adults. Methods: Data were obtained from 1033 Finnish adults from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study in 2007 and 2011. Cohort study participants wore an Omron Walking Style One (HJ-152R-E) pedometer for five days and were grouped into those who increased, maintained and decreased their steps betwe…
Childhood Psychosocial Cumulative Risks and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Adulthood
OBJECTIVE: Adverse experiences in childhood may influence cardiovascular risk in adulthood. We examined the prospective associations between types of psychosocial adversity and having multiple adversities (e.g., cumulative risk) with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and its progression among young adults. Higher cumulative risk score in childhood was expected to be associated with higher IMT and its progression. METHODS: Participants were 226…
Tracking of Physical Activity from Early Childhood through Youth into Adulthood
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to investigate the tracking of physical activity (PA) from preschool age to adulthood in six age cohorts of males and females. METHODS: A random sample of 3596 boys and girls age 3-18 yr participated in the Cardiovascular Risks in Young Finns Study in 1980. The follow-up measurements were repeated in 1986, 1992, 2001, and 2007. The PA was measured by mother's report in 3- and 6-yr-olds and self-report in 9-yr-old…
Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase Activation and Depressive Symptoms
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the activation of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), an enzyme involved in serotonin production, is associated with depressive symptoms. METHODS: The participants were 544 women and 442 men (aged 24-39 years) from the population-based Young Finns Study who participated in a medical examination in 2001 (including IDO and depression) and 2007 (follow-up assessment for depression). RESULTS: At baseline, IDO was associat…
Socioeconomic status and the development of depressive symptoms from childhood to adulthood
Childhood Adiposity, Adult Adiposity, and Cardiovascular Risk Factors
BACKGROUND: Obesity in childhood is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. It is uncertain whether this risk is attenuated in persons who are overweight or obese as children but not obese as adults. METHODS: We analyzed data from four prospective cohort studies that measured childhood and adult body-mass index (BMI, the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters). The mean length of follow-up was 23 years. To define…
Development of adulthood hostile attitudes
The effects of the serotonin receptor 2A (HTR2A) and 1A (HTR1A) polymorphisms and maternal caregiving attitudes on child's later hostile attitudes were examined. The sample consisted of 819 Finnish children and adolescents. Nurturance was reported by the mothers during childhood, while hostile attitudes were reported by the participants in adulthood. Caregiving attitudes predicted hostile attitudes (β = −.069, p = .047), but HTR2A and HTR1A were …
Sweets and sugar-sweetened soft drink intake in childhood in relation to adult BMI and overweight. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study
Objective To investigate the associations of BMI and overweight in adulthood with consumption of sweets and sugar-sweetened soft drinks in childhood and with the change in consumption between childhood and adulthood. Design Longitudinal 21-year follow-up study of Finnish children and adolescents from childhood to adulthood. Setting The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, comprising participants from both eastern and western Finland. Subject…

Early Risk Factors, Job Strain, and Atherosclerosis Among Men in Their 30s
We examined whether preemployment influences confounded the association between job strain and atherosclerosis. We assessed biological, familial, and socioeconomic risk factors of coronary heart disease at 12 to 18 years of age and job strain and carotid artery intima-media thickness at 33 to 39 years of age for a cohort of 358 men. Adolescent risk factors predicted adult intima-media thickness but had little effect on the dose–response relation …
Childhood Hyperactivity as a Predictor of Carotid Artery Intima Media Thickness Over a Period of 21 Years
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether childhood temperament was able to predict carotid artery intima media thickness (IMT) and/or its risk factors in adulthood 21 years later. METHODS: The subjects were the three youngest age cohorts of the population-based sample of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns study, i.e., those who were aged 3 to 9 years (n = 708) at the baseline. IMT was assessed by ultrasound, and temperament in terms of negative emo…
Consistent dietary patterns identified from childhood to adulthood
Dietary patterns are useful in nutritional epidemiology, providing a comprehensive alternative to the traditional approach based on single nutrients. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study is a prospective cohort study with a 21-year follow-up. At baseline, detailed quantitative information on subjects' food consumption was obtained using a 48 h dietary recall method ( n 1768, aged 3–18 years). The interviews were repeated after 6 and 21 ye…

Depressive Symptoms and Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness in Young Adults
OBJECTIVE: Depression and coronary heart disease are often comorbid conditions, but the mechanism behind this link is largely unknown. We tested the hypothesis that a high level of depressive symptoms in healthy young adults would be related to more prevalent preclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS: We studied the association between depressive symptoms and carotid atherosclerosis in 1126 young adults (410 men and 716 women) as part of the ongoing p…
Longitudinal changes in diet from childhood into adulthood with respect to risk of cardiovascular diseases
Parental nutrition knowledge and nutrient intake in an atherosclerosis prevention project
Perceived Social Support and Abdominal Fat Distribution in Adolescents and Young Adults
Characteristics of young men with clustering risk factors for coronary heart disease
The majority of coronary heart disease (CHD) arises from a population with only moderately elevated risk factor levels. This study addressed the issue of whether clustering of moderately adverse levels of serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was detectable in children and young adults. Significant clustering of these factors was observed in young …
