  • Exploring the rhenium-osmium isotopic system and metal trace-elements analysis for iron provenance

  • “A land whose stones are iron…”—Iron ore sources in the Southern Levant

    Open Access•Adi Eliyahu-Behar, Adi Eliyahu‐behar et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2023

Recent discoveries of iron production remains in multiple Iron Age sites throughout the Southern Levant indicate the significance of iron production in the region during this time. However, one main question remains unanswered—that is, provenance: Where were the iron resources located? Were they local or brought from afar? Answering these questions would allow great potential for reconstructing iron-ore procurement strategies and exploitation pra…

  • By the hand of the smelter

    Open Access•I Stepanov, Ivan S Stepanov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 12•References: 32

Slag analyses from archaeological iron smelting sites are common. Rigorous analyses of iron and slag from successful experimental smelting, however, are still rare. Furthermore, thorough analyses from a series of smelts, and of the slag produced in different phases of the smelt, are exceedingly rare. The present study investigates the effect of an iron smelter's decision-making and skills on the products of the smelting process: iron and slag. Fo…

  • Iron Age Metal Production at Tell eṣ-Ṣâfi/Gath

    Adi Eliyahu-Behar, Adi Eliyahu‐behar et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 9

While the increasing appearance of iron objects between the late twelfth and early eleventh centuries B.C.E. has been the greatest indicator for the shift from bronze to iron use that marks the transition to the Iron Age, a nuanced understanding of the technological phenomenon comes from evidence and artifacts of production. The origins of iron production technologies are still hotly debated. In recent years, new and pertinent archaeological data…

  • Early Bronze Age pebble installations from Tell es-Safi/Gath, Israel

    Adi Eliyahu-Behar, Adi Eliyahu‐behar et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•2017

Pebble stone installations are commonly found at various Early Bronze Age sites in the southern Levant. However, their function is often assumed or unknown. Thirteen circular pebble installations were found scattered throughout a residential neighbourhood dating to the Early Bronze Age III at Tell es-Safi/Gath. Five such installations were recently studied by implementing an integrated micro-archaeological approach by which all micro- and macro-a…

In the framework of the European Research Council-funded project, “Reconstructing Ancient (Biblical) Israel: The Exact and Life Sciences Perspective,” we carried out multiple analyses on iron and bronze objects from provenanced contexts in Israel, as well as on previously unidentified metallurgical remains from the production of both metals. In addition, we counted anew iron and bronze objects from well-stratified contexts and studied metalworkin…

  • The Early Bronze Age Remains at Tell eṣ-Ṣāfi/Gath

    Itzhaq Shai, Haskel J Greenfield et al.•ARTICLE•Tel Aviv•2014•Cited by: 25•References: 9

Several Early Bronze Age levels have been exposed at Tell eṣ-Ṣāfi/Gath since 2004. This report describes the results of the excavation of the EB III domestic neighbourhood on the eastern part of the site, in Area E. Its layout was common to other Early Bronze urban centres, including small, multiroom houses with a courtyard, and in a few cases also a small storage room. Occupants had access to local and long distance trade and exotic goods, used …

  • Identifying a Roman Casting Pit at Tel Dor, Israel

    Adi Eliyahu-Behar, Adi Eliyahu‐behar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 15

The functional identification of industrial features is difficult when few characteristic artifacts are preserved. We studied a Roman-period pyrotechnological feature at Tel Dor, Israel, where the only possibly diagnostic ceramic artifacts were found in fill between the walls and above the floor, rendering their association with the feature itself uncertain. The ceramic artifacts included coarse slabs and fragments of utilitarian vessels, some vi…
