Expanding the perspective on the environment-human nexus in the Quaternary
Two years of Quaternary Environments and Humans
Problems associated with the age determination of the oldest pottery yielding cultural layers at the Studenoe 1 site, Transbaikal (southern Siberia)
Old World Ceramic Origins and Behavioral Contexts from the Late Pleistocene to Mid-Holocene

U‐Pb dating of zircon
U‐Pb zircon radiometric dating and petrographic thin‐section analysis were used for provenance identification of Ferrería and Marrón Inciso pottery styles from La Morena archaeological site in northwestern Colombia. U‐Pb dating was applied to zircons recovered from pottery and rock samples from nearby geological units. The results suggest at least three distinct sources: the metamorphic rock unit on which the archaeological site is located, a gra…
Late Upper Paleolithic occupation at Cooper’s Ferry, Idaho, USA, ~16,000 years ago
The early occupation of America The Cooper's Ferry archaeological site in western North America has provided evidence for the pattern and time course of the early peopling of the Americas. Davis et al. describe new evidence of human activity from this site, including stemmed projectile points. Radiocarbon dating and Bayesian analysis indicate an age between 16,560 and 15,280 years before present. Humans therefore arrived in the Americas before an…
The Timing and Behavioral Context of the Late-Pleistocene Adoption of Ceramics in Greater East and Northeast Asia and the First People (Without Pottery) in the Americas
Scholars have suggested that late Pleistocene foragers in greater East and Northeast Asia adopted pottery, but the chronology and behavioral contexts of pottery adoption are debated. This review evaluates those cases and debates, and places them into the context of the peopling of the Americas. Pottery was adopted (1) around the time of the adoption of (partially) domesticated plant foods in China, (2) by mobile foragers of the terminal Oldest Dr…

The earliest Panamanian pottery
Monagrillo pottery ( ca . 4500‐3200 14 C yr B.P.) is the earliest in Panama and one of the first ceramics in the New World. It is found in two distinct site types: (1) shell‐bearing middens of the northeastern Azuero Peninsula and (2) rock shelters of the Pacific plains, foothils, and cordillera, and the Caribbean slopes of central Panama. Here, I present a study that sources Monagrillo ceramics using petrography to distinguish locally produced f…
