Changes in idiographic coping in youth treated for an anxiety disorder
BACKGROUND: Youth anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and associated with adverse outcomes. Prior research demonstrated improvement in anxiety symptoms following evidence-based treatment; however, not all youth experience symptom remission, nor do they consistently maintain gains. We examined idiographic changes in youths' perceived ability to cope with individualized anxiety-provoking situations from pretreatment to six-month follow-up in the…
Implications of cooccurring ADHD for the cognitive behavioural treatment of anxiety in autistic children
BACKGROUND: Childhood mental health conditions commonly cooccur, with potential treatment implications. Autistic children frequently experience anxiety and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We investigated the implications of this cooccurrence for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a front-line treatment for anxiety in autistic children. We tested whether (1) ADHD predicts anxiety treatment response, (2) ADHD improves in response…

The Role of Interpersonal Characteristics in Early and Developing Therapeutic Alliance Among Periadolescents with Anxiety
Little work has examined associations between interpersonal factors and changes in the therapeutic alliance. We examined the association between baseline youth family and peer interpersonal characteristics and therapeutic alliance throughout treatment in a sample of anxious youths who received cognitive behavioral therapy or client-centered therapy. Youths (N = 135; M = 10.94; SD = 1.46) were in a randomized clinical trial for anxiety disorders. …
Using Machine Learning to Predict Treatment Outcome in a Concatenated Dataset of Youth Anxiety Treatments
Treating anxiety in youth
Following mention of the features of interfering anxiety in youth, the several treatment components supported by evidence are considered. The findings from three sample randomized clinical trials are summarized, and related findings on effectiveness, moderators, mediators, follow-ups, functional outcomes, and computer-assisted and telehealth efforts are identified. Implementing an empirically supported treatment is a therapist's choice, and the t…
Substance use outcomes from the Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Extended Long‐term Study (Camels)
BACKGROUND: Substance use problems and anxiety disorders are both highly prevalent and frequently cooccur in youth. The present study examined the benefits of successful anxiety treatment at 3-12 years after treatment completion on substance use outcomes (i.e. diagnoses and lifetime expected use). METHODS: The sample was from the Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Extended Long-term Study (CAMELS), a naturalistic follow-up study to the Child/Ado…
Intolerance of uncertainty as a transdiagnostic vulnerability to anxiety disorders in youth
Anxiety symptom trajectories from treatment to 5‐ to 12‐year follow‐up across childhood and adolescence
OBJECTIVE: The current study examined trajectories of anxiety during (a) acute treatment and (b) extended follow-up to better characterize the long-term symptom trajectories of youth who received evidence-based intervention for anxiety disorders using a person-centered approach. METHOD: Participants were 319 youth (age 7-17 years at enrollment), who participated in a multicenter randomized controlled trial for the treatment of pediatric anxiety d…

Dental Anxiety in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder
Dental anxiety seems to be elevated in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and may be associated with feelings of helplessness, loss of control, and sensory overload. Dental anxiety, a primary contributor to dental avoidance, can lead to unwanted long-term oral hygiene consequences. This manuscript characterizes the frequency and correlates of dental anxiety in children with ASD. Specifically, this study examined associations between ch…

Comorbidity of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents
Brady and Kendall (1992) concluded that although anxiety and depression in youths are meaningfully linked, there are important distinctions, and additional research is needed. Since then, studies of anxiety-depression comorbidity in youths have increased exponentially. Following a discussion of comorbidity, we review existing conceptual models and propose a multiple pathways model to anxiety-depression comorbidity. Pathway 1 describes youths with…
Comorbidity of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents
Anxiety and depression in children and adolescents are reviewed, including differential diagnosis, assessment of symptoms, family history data, developmental features, and clinical correlates. Findings indicate that 15.9% to 61.9% of children identified as anxious or depressed have comorbid anxiety and depressive disorders and that measures of anxiety and depression are highly correlated. Family history data are inconclusive. Differences emerged …
Cognitive specificity in emotional distress
Cognitive approaches to emotional distress posit that specific cognitive factors are critically linked to the etiology, course, or treatment of dysfunction. Although a number of empirical studies have assessed cognitive factors in emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety, research has yet to assess these variables simultaneously and with identical cognitive measures. Using depression and test anxiety as models of dysfunctional affective…
Acculturation, Religiosity, and Ethnicity Predict Mothers' Causal Beliefs About Separation Anxiety Disorder and Preferences for Help-Seeking
This study examined causal beliefs about separation anxiety disorder (SAD) and preferences for help-seeking among 117 Indian American, Puerto Rican, and European American mothers. Mothers completed measures of acculturation and strength of religious faith (SORF) and, after reading vignettes describing SAD, made judgments about the etiology of symptoms and the likelihood of various forms of help-seeking for youth SAD symptoms. Hierarchical multipl…
Application of Faschingbauer's Abbreviated MMPI to Parents of Emotionally Disturbed Children
To investigate the potential usefulness of Faschingbauer's (1974) abbreviated MMPI with parents of emotionally disturbed children referred for residential treatment 180 MMPI profiles were scored for this short form and scores compared with norms from the standard MMPI. While correlations were significant, many mean scores on the Faschingbauer were significantly different from those on the full MMPI. Modest correspondence between the two formats o…
Empathy, Locus of Control and Anxiety in College Students
To investigate the correlations between empathy, locus of control, and anxiety 59 college students were administered Hogan's (6) empathy scale, Spielberger's (12) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Rotter's (10) locus of control scale. Empathy correlated significantly with both state (—.36) and trait (—.36) anxiety while locus of control correlated with trait anxiety only (.36). There was no significant correlation between empathy and locus of co…
Anxiety and Locus of Conflict in Normal Children
63 mostly white seventh graders were given the Locus of Conflict Rating Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children, and the Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale. No sex differences were noted. Correlations were small even when significant, except for .82 between CMAS Anxiety and Trait Anxiety. Some validity for the Locus of Conflict Rating Scale is indicated

Rigor, but not rigor mortis, in depression research
With reference to the depression research methods review of H. Tennen, J.A. Hall, and G. Affleck (1995) and the earlier recommendations of P. C. Kendall, S. D. Hollon, A. T. Beck, C. L. Hammen, and R. E. Ingram (1987), the present discussion considers and then reaffirms selected methods. Discussion includes issues such as the use of analogue vs. clinical samples, single vs. multiple assessments, self-report vs. structured diagnostic interviews, a…

Somatic Complaints in Children with Anxiety Disorders and their Unique Prediction of Poorer Academic Performance
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Sertraline, or a Combination in Childhood Anxiety
BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common psychiatric conditions affecting children and adolescents. Although cognitive behavioral therapy and selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors have shown efficacy in treating these disorders, little is known about their relative or combined efficacy. METHODS: In this randomized, controlled trial, we assigned 488 children between the ages of 7 and 17 years who had a primary diagnosis of separation anxiety dis…
Effect of a positive emotional state on interpretation bias for threat in children with anxiety disorders
The authors examined the effect of a positive emotional state on interpretation bias for threat in children with anxiety disorders. Participants were 34 children with anxiety disorders and 34 children without any psychological disorders who were randomly assigned to either a positive or neutral emotion induction condition. Consistent with the broaden-and-build theory, children with anxiety disorders exhibited an interpretation bias for threat, bu…

Training therapists in evidence-based practice
Evidence-based practice (EBP), a preferred psychological treatment approach, requires training of community providers. The systems-contextual (SC) perspective, a model for dissemination and implementation efforts, underscores the importance of the therapist, client, and organizational variables that influence training and consequent therapist uptake and adoption of EBP. This review critiques the extant research on training in EBP from an SC persp…
