Early childhood growth patterns and malnutrition in rural Southern India
Background Malnutrition remains a pervasive problem among Indian children, but cross-sectional surveillance surveys and studies fail to identify secular trends and growth patterns. The study analyzed longitudinal data from the Longitudinal Indian Family hEalth (LIFE) birth cohort, established in 2009 to examine early childhood development. The field area for the LIFE cohort consists of rural to peri-urban villages in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, …
Developing a modified and contextualised Occupational Justice Health Questionnaire (OJHQ) for use with marginalised populations
Undesirable Levels of Practice Behaviours and Associated Knowledge amongst Community Health Workers in Rural South India Responsible for Type 2 Diabetes Screening and Management
This study highlights widespread deficiencies (97% CHWs) in diabetes management practices and knowledge (95% CHWs). To overcome these deficiencies, a thorough needs assessments is vital for effective CHW training. Training of CHWs should not only identify prior knowledge and/or behaviour but also their interrelationship to help create a robust and flexible set of practice behaviours

The Lancet Global Health Commission on Global Eye Health
There is extensive evidence showing that improving eye health contributes directly and indirectly to achieving many Sustainable Development Goals, including reducing poverty and improving work productivity, general and mental health, and education and equity. Improving eye health is a practical and cost-effective way of unlocking human potential. Eye health needs to be reframed as an enabling, cross-cutting issue within the sustainable developmen…
Determinants of Breastfeeding Practices and Its Association With Infant Anthropometry
Introduction: Despite national efforts for promoting exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) during the first 6 months of the infants' life, breastfeeding rates are low in India. Evidence on the interference of supplementary food on optimal nourishment and growth of the infant has also been well-established. Our study was undertaken to assess the effect of breastfeeding practices on infant anthropometry and determine the various factors affecting breastfee…

Dengue's re-emerging epidemiology poses a major global health threat. India contributes significantly to the global communicable disease burden has been declared highly dengue-endemic, exposing public health authorities to severe challenges. Our study aims to provide a deeper understanding of India's urban dengue surveillance policies as well as to explore the organisation, functioning and integration of existing disease control pillars. The Organization, Implementation, and Functioning of Dengue Surveillance in India—A Systematic Scoping Review

This study aims to identify and critically appraise India's dengue surveillance system. We conducted a systematic literature review, searching Medline, Web of Sciences, Global Health, and Indian Journals. We conducted a narrative synthesis and thematic an…
Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950–2017
BACKGROUND: Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent wit…
Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life-years (Dalys) for 359 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (Hale) for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017
BACKGROUND: How long one lives, how many years of life are spent in good and poor health, and how the population's state of health and leading causes of disability change over time all have implications for policy, planning, and provision of services. We comparatively assessed the patterns and trends of healthy life expectancy (HALE), which quantifies the number of years of life expected to be lived in good health, and the complementary measure o…
Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories
BACKGROUND: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2…
Nations within a nation
BACKGROUND: 18% of the world's population lives in India, and many states of India have populations similar to those of large countries. Action to effectively improve population health in India requires availability of reliable and comprehensive state-level estimates of disease burden and risk factors over time. Such comprehensive estimates have not been available so far for all major diseases and risk factors. Thus, we aimed to estimate the dise…
At the margins of biomedicine
This analysis challenges a tendency in public health and the social sciences to associate India's medical pluralism with a distinction between biomedicine, as a homogeneous entity, and its non-biomedical 'others'. We argue that this overdrawn dichotomy obscures the important part played by 'informal' biomedical practice, an issue with salience well beyond India. Based on a qualitative study in rural Andhra Pradesh, South India, we focus on a figu…
MHealth and the management of chronic conditions in rural areas
This article examines challenges facing implementation of likely mHealth programmes in rural India. Based on fieldwork in Andhra Pradesh in 2014, and taking as exemplars two chronic medical 'conditions' - type 2 diabetes and depression - we look at ways in which people in one rural area currently access medical treatment; we also explore how adults there currently use mobile phones in daily life, to gauge the realistic likelihood of uptake for po…
Community Based Maternal Death Review
Access to health care and employment status of people with disabilities in South India, the Side (South India Disability Evidence) study
This study highlights the challenges that people with disability face in accessing health-care and employment opportunities. The study findings have public health implications and should be used for planning need-based appropriate strategies to improve health care access for people with disabilities
Prevalence and risk factors for diabetes and diabetic retinopathy
The age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria was 3.25% (95%CI 2.50-4.30) and over 10% of people with diabetes aged ≥40 years had sight-threatening-DR. These data will enable the development of better public health strategies for the control of diabetes and planning services for DR to prevent vision loss
