An Early Iron Age Female Funeral Site in the Ukrainian Forest-Steppe
The article reports the results of research focused on Barrow 3 in Ivanivtsi-Antonivka, Vinnitsia oblast, Ukraine, which was carried out by a Polish-Ukrainian team in 2019. This small and badly damaged barrow contained just seven features, including only two graves. The results of the multifaceted analyses indicated that despite the small number of sites, the history of the barrow can be divided into three phases – all resulting from the activity…
The earliest Holocene wanderers through the Gobi Desert evidenced by the radiocarbon chronology of the lakeshore settlement near the Tsakhiurtyn Hondi, Mongolia
We report a set of radiocarbon dating of prehistoric settlements located on the paleolake Baruun Khuree shores in the Gobi-Altai area, southern Mongolia. The obtained series of 11 AMS 14 C measurements on charcoal and other charred plant macro-remains can be associated with one of the earliest episodes of the Holocene highly mobile desert-adapted hunter-gatherers activities from the Gobi desert (ca. 11,250–10,500 cal BP). Exploiting a wide range …
A mysterious burial from the Kerma Culture (second millennium BC) in the Bayuda Desert of Sudan
During work carried out in the Bayuda Desert in Sudan at the site of BP937 in 2018 the grave of a man was discovered. The grave was classified as belonging to the Kerma Culture and dated to the early phase of the Old Kush II period (c. 2050–1750 BC). In addition to faience beads, the grave goods consisted of two clay vessels. One was placed standing upright, while the other was placed upside down. This may constitute an element of the funeral rit…

SedaDNA shows that transhumance of domestic herbivores has enhanced plant diversity over the Holocene in the Eastern European Alps
The Eastern European Alps boasts highly biodiverse ecosystems and a rich archaeological history. However, there is limited research on the enduring impacts of historical climate change and human activities on plant biodiversity in this region. Using sedimentary ancient DNA, we reconstructed plant and animal dynamics from 8500 years before present (ka BP) around Großer Winterleitensee (Zirbitzkogel, Austria). Variable intensities of human activiti…

Barrow Necropolis from the 3rd and 2nd Millennia BC in Western Ukraine. A Bayesian Modeling and Isotopic Study
This article discusses the absolute chronology of burials from the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC discovered under the mounds of three barrows in the Kordyshiv cemetery in western Ukraine. Its aim is to create a chronological model of the burials by modeling 27 AMS 14 C dates obtained from 21 individuals buried in single and collective graves. Dietary analysis of stable carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotope values are presented. The Bayesian mo…
Cave funeral practices during the Roman and Migration Periods in the Cracow Upland, southern Poland
Although caves have been used for funerary purposes almost since the dawn of time, there is very little evidence of such use in Central European Barbaricum. This paper presents newly obtained results from the Cracow Upland (southern Poland) concerning multiple skeletal remains that apparently share a similar third–fifth centuries AD chronology, corresponding to the Late Roman and Early Migration Periods. Multiple analyses have been performed to s…
New Insights Into Late Pleistocene Cave Hyena Chronology and Population History—the Case of Perspektywiczna Cave, Poland
The paper focuses on the Pleistocene deposits in Perspektywiczna Cave, southern Poland, related to cave hyena ( Crocuta crocuta ). We used direct radiocarbon dating of hyena fossils supported by genetic and stable isotope analyses to infer the paleobiology of this population. Radiocarbon dating of 19 hyena remains suggests long inhabitation of the region during early MIS 3, around 50–34 ky cal BP. The youngest among our dates, 34,355–33,725 cal B…

This paper summarises the results of multidisciplinary research, including pollen, plant macroremains, diatoms, Cladocera, molluscs and geochemistry from a 14 C dated core and geomorphological records, which reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental conditions faced by Late Palaeolithic hunter-gathers in western Poland. Particular attention was paid to evidence for both human activity and the degree to which Late Palaeolithic groups may have affected t…
Bark pitch in the Early Neolithic of Central Europe
The Linear Pottery people in 5670-5000 BC at the Brunn sites in Austria produced birch and beech bark pitches. Big globular vessels and closed high bowls could have been containers for the production and storage of this substance. Miniature vessels with a handle for hanging had contained small portions. Bark pitch as an adhesive for the repair of pottery and in the construction of big idols is also testified, as is the application of this materia…
The Absolute Chronology of Collective Burials From the 2nd Millennium Bc in East Central Europe
This article discusses the absolute chronology of collective burials of the Trzciniec Cultural Circle communities of the Middle Bronze Age in East Central Europe. Based on Bayesian modeling of 91 accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dates from 18 cemeteries, the practice of collective burying of individuals was linked to a period of 400–640 (95.4%) years, between 1830–1690 (95.4%) and 1320–1160 (95.4%) BC. Collective burials in mo…

The Cultural Project
Starting from questions about the nature of cultural diversity, this paper examines the pace and tempo of change and the relative importance of continuity and discontinuity. To unravel the cultural project of the past, we apply chronological modelling of radiocarbon dates within a Bayesian statistical framework, to interrogate the Neolithic cultural sequence in Lower Alsace, in the upper Rhine valley, in broad terms from the later sixth to the en…
Mortar Dating Methodology
Absolute dating of mortars is crucial when trying to pin down construction phases of archaeological sites and historic stone buildings to a certain point in time or to confirm, but possibly also challenge, existing chronologies. To evaluate various sample preparation methods for radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of mortars as well as to compare different dating methods, i.e. 14 C and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), a mortar dating intercomparis…

Methodological Aspect of Mortars Dating (Poznań, Poland, Modis)
An accurate radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of mortars requires adjusting the sample preparation procedure to each specific mortar composition. In order to follow the influence of mortar components and the preparation procedure on dating results, a mortar intercomparison study (MODIS) was undertaken by 10 organizations (institutes and laboratories) in the analyses of four different types of mortars (see in this issue Hajdas et al. 2017 and Hayen et al…
C Dating of Carbonate Mortars from Polish and Israeli Sites
The presented research involves the analysis and radiocarbon dating of 2 different groups of carbonate mortars, from Kraków, Poland and Hippos, Israel. Differences in composition of the mortars are reflected in different rates of their acid leaching. The Israeli mortars contain carbonate-basaltic aggregates, which may cause overestimation of 14 C age. Preliminary processing of these samples (choice of selected grain-size fraction and collection o…
Radiocarbon Intercomparison Program for Chauvet Cave
We present the first results of an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon intercomparison program on 3 different charcoal samples collected in one of the hearths of the Megaceros gallery of Chauvet Cave (Ardèche, France). This cave, rich in parietal decoration, is important for the study of the appearance and evolution of prehistoric art because certain drawings have been 14 C dated to the Aurignacian period at the beginning of the Upper…
Contamination Studies on Mollusk Shell Samples
A series of shell samples has been studied to determine the magnitude and mechanisms of carbon exchange between shells and their environment. Laboratory contamination experiments included the storing of shell samples in acid and calcareous environments of different 14 C concentrations as well as studies of carbon exchange in the course of thermal recrystallization in solid state in an atomosphere of carbon dioxide. The applicability of differenti…
Towards a Chronology of the Jerzmanowician—a New Series of Radiocarbon Dates from Nietoperzowa Cave (Poland)
The period around 50 000–35 000 years ago constitutes one of the most debated research issues in European archaeology of the Palaeolithic. In this time period, the transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic took place. Locally, in different areas of Europe, this shift is recorded in so‐called transitional assemblages. The eastern fringe of these transitional assemblages is represented by the Jerzmanowician, the unit described on the bas…

Ancient DNA identification of domestic animals used for leather objects in Central Asia during the Bronze Age
The arid climate of many regions within Central Asia often leads to excellent archaeological preservation, especially in sealed funerary contexts, allowing for ancient DNA analyses. While geneticists have looked at human remains, clothes, tools, and other burial objects are often neglected. In this paper, we present the results of an ancient DNA study on Bronze Age leather objects excavated from tombs of the Wupu cemetery in the Hami Oasis and Ya…
Foraminiferous Limestone in 14 C Dating of Mortar
Mortar as a mixture of binder and aggregate can be reliably dated with radiocarbon if the applied preparation method allows one to eliminate unburnt carbonate fragments, bearing 14 C-depleted carbon and causing overestimation of 14 C age. To avoid these problems, separation of specific grain-size fractions of mortar and 14 C analysis of the CO 2 portions collected in different time intervals of the acid-leaching reaction is usually helpful. In th…

The impact of tourism and reindeer herding on forest vegetation at Saariselkä, Finnish Lapland
A high-resolution peat profile from the vicinity of Saariselkä (68°25.24'N, 27°25.19'E), a large tourist centre in northern Finnish Lapland, was sampled continuously at near annual resolution to a depth of 22 cm in order to interpret the changes in pollen assemblages and vegetation resulting from human interference and reindeer herding. Fifteen AMS dates were wiggle-matched with the atmospheric 14 C calibration curve. The resulting age—depth mode…
Radiocarbon Dating of Modern Peat Profiles
We present studies of 9 modern (up to 400-yr-old) peat sections from Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and Finland. Precise radiocarbon dating of modern samples is possible due to the large bomb peak of atmospheric 14 C concentration in 1963 and the following rapid decline in the 14 C level. All the analyzed 14 C profiles appeared concordant with the shape of the bomb peak of atmospheric 14 C concentration, integrated over some time interval…
Palaeobotanical records from Rebun Island and their potential for improving the chronological control and understanding human–environment interactions in the Hokkaido Region, Japan
Rebun Island with Hamanaka and Funadomari among the 43 documented archaeological sites and the environmental archive stored in the Lake Kushu sediment proves to be one of the key areas to study the interplay between ecology, climate and human activities. This paper focuses on the potential of palaeobotanical records from Rebun Island for improving the chronological control and understanding of late Quaternary climate changes and habitation enviro…
Radiocarbon Calibration by Means of Varves Versus 14 C Ages of Terrestrial Macrofossils from Lake Gościąż and Lake Perespilno, Poland
This paper presents radiocarbon dates of terrestrial macrofossils from Lakes Gościąż and Perespilno, Poland. These data agree very well with most of the German pine calibration curve. In the Late Glacial, they generally agree with the data from Lake Suigetsu, Japan, and indicate constant or even increasing 14 C age between 12.9 and 12.7 ka BP, rapid decline of 14 C age around 12.6 ka BP, and a long plateau 10,400 14 C BP around 12 ka BP. Correlat…

An attempt is presented to establish an absolute chronology of early Slavonic habitation in the region of the mouth of the Odra River up to the Baltic and to find associations with a series of stave boats and dugouts of different levels of technology and navigation. The methodology of the research project is presented and some conclusions of a general nature are drawn from the results already obtained
Radiocarbon and Varve Chronologies of Annually Laminated Lake Sediments of Gościαz Lake, Central Poland
A sequence of annually laminated sediments of the Gościαz Lake spans ca 13,000 yr and is actually the longest known continuous sequence in the world. 14 C age measurements were performed on organic and carbonate fractions of bulk samples of laminated sediments from core GO. Accurate measurements of varve thickness performed on the lower part of cores G1 and G2 were used to establish a floating varve chronology covering ca 10,000 yr. Matching of c…
Improved Precision 14C Measurements and Natural 14C Variations Around 10,000 Cal BP
Thirty-one samples of 5 tree rings from a single oak trunk with 300 tree rings were measured with improved precision to study natural 14 C variations in the period from ca 9750 – 10,050 cal bp. Negative correlation was found between Δ 14 C values and tree-ring indices. The pattern of 14 C changes in the studied interval closely resembles the changes observed in several periodically spanned intervals within the limits of high-precision calibration…
Systematic Biases in Results of the International Collaborative Study and Their Probable Sources
Results of the International Collaborative Study show an unexpectedly large scatter of individual dates as well as systematic biases. Very high values of linear correlation coefficients are observed for all results of Stage 2 and for benzene samples of Stage 1. We observed moderate correlations for carbonate samples and the lowest for natural samples of wood and peat of Stage 3. The correlation is practically negligible among results obtained in …

Possibilities for Reconstructing Radiocarbon Level Changes During the Late Glacial by Using a Laminated Sequence of Gościaż Lake
Laminated sediments of Gościaż Lake can be used as an independent source of material for calibrating the radiocarbon time scale. The varve chronology is based on three long cores from the deepest part of the lake, with one additional core from the second deepest part. From pollen and Cladocera spectra and stable isotope and chemical content sequences, we have determined the Allerød(AL)/Younger Dryas(YD) and Younger Dryas/Preboreal(PB) boundaries …
Radiocarbon Chronology of Late Glacial and Holocene Sedimentation and Water-Level Changes in the Area of the Gościąż Lake Basin
We obtained 14 C ages on samples of lake marl and other sediments from cores taken in Gościąż Lake and its environs. Comparison of 14 C dates of bulk samples of laminated sediment with varve chronology and available AMS dates of terrestrial macrofossils indicates a reservoir correction of 2000 ± 120 yr for the basal series of lake sediments. 14 C dates obtained on peat layers underlying the oldest lacustrine sediments in Gościąż and other lakes c…
Gliwice Radiocarbon Dates XI
The following list presents results of dating archaeological samples from Poland processed between 1979 and 1985. Three carbon dioxide-filled proportional counters (L1, L2 and L3) of different sizes were used for dating (Pazdur et al. 1982). Procedures for sample pretreatment, counting, statistical analysis and age calculations were essentially the same as previously described (Pazdur et al. 1982, 1985). All results are reported as conventional 1…

The analyzer acquires and stores information on the pulse's amplitudes and rise-times and their coincidence w…
The Younger Dryas Cold Event—Was It Synchronous Over the North Atlantic Region
Determined independently from annually laminated ice cores and lake sediments, and German pines, the calendar ages of Younger Dryas (YD) boundaries significantly disagree with one another. 14 C dates, plotted vs. calendar ages for samples from different sediments, also reveal distinct offsets. The adjustment of varve chronologies to synchronize the boundaries of the YD nearly cancels the discrepancies between 14 C data, and supports the synchroni…
Radiocarbon Dating the Holocene in the Gościąż Lake Floating Varve Chronology
Terrestrial macrofossils selected from laminated sediment of Lake Gościąż were dated by AMS. Thus, part of the floating varve chronology (FVC) (Goslar et al. 1993) between radiocarbon ages of 4225 ± 45 and 7740 ± 85 bp can be compared and placed on the 14 C calibration curve. As a result of our dating, the top of the FVC is now dated between 3120 and 3300 cal bp, i.e., 3210 ± 90 cal bp
Using the Bayesian Method to Study the Precision of Dating by Wiggle-Matching
The “wiggle-matching” technique has been widely used for the absolute dating of a series of radiocarbon-dated samples connected in one floating chronology. This is done by calculations of SS statistics (the mean-square distance of 14 C ages of samples from the calibration curve) calculated for any assumed calendar age of the floating chronology. In the standard procedure the confidence intervals of true calendar age are derived from the width of …

Comparison of U-Series and Radiocarbon Dates of Speleothems
The paper presents a comparison of U-series and radiocarbon dates of speleothems collected in several caves in central and southern Europe and southeast Africa. Despite a large spread of dates, mainly due to contamination with younger carbon, the group of corresponding 14 C and 230 Th/U ages of speleothem samples seems to be coherent with the previous suggestion of large deviation between the 14 C and the absolute time scale between 35 and 45 ka …

Influence of the Bomb-Produced 14 C on the Radiocarbon Concentration in the Youngest Sediments of Lake Gościąż, Central Poland
This work is a study of changes of the radiocarbon concentration in the youngest part of Lake Gościąż sediments in the calendar time scale during the last 150 years. This period includes the time of the nuclear weapons tests performed in the upper atmosphere in the 1950s and the 1960s, which caused large release of 14 C and 137 Cs into the environment. On the basis of this study, the isotope dilution factor for 14 C and the exchange time of carbo…
Absolute Production of Radiocarbon and the Long-Term Trend of Atmospheric Radiocarbon
This paper presents simulations of the long-term trend of atmospheric radiocarbon, performed with the modified PANDORA model. The author shows that taking into account the outflow-supply carbon fluxes makes the decrease of D 14 C between 40 and 0 ka BP larger by 40–80‰, not much depending on which data (sedimentary magnetism, archaeomagnetism or 10 Be) is used for the scenario of relative variations of 14 C production. This, together with the eff…

Searching Solar Periodicities in the Late Glacial Record of Atmospheric Radiocarbon
Accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating of the late glacial section of laminated sediments from Lake Gościąż and Lake Perespilno, Poland, performed with time resolution of 20–30 years suggests quasi-periodic oscillations of δ 14 C. The regularity of oscillations has been checked by the Maximum Entropy and Fast Fourier Transform methods (MEM and FFT), which revealed peaks at 200 and 230 yr. These periods are similar to those fo…
