  • Consumer-Driven Memorialization

    Open Access•Stephanie Anderson, K Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 70

Consumer research has focused on market-mediated efforts to memorialize the past, but this overshadows the issues that arise when consumers, as nonprofessionals, make the past consumable. Consumer-driven memorialization is defined as consumer engagement with traces of the past in memoryscapes of low market-mediation that creates a complex interplay of remembering and forgetting. Based on an ethnographic study of urban exploration, we theorize tha…

  • Authoritative performances of care in home exchange

Open Access•K Hamilton, Paul Hewer et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 45

This research examines the position of home exchange within the sharing economy. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research, we adopt the lens of authoritative performances to explore how home exchangers resolve contradictions between competing endeavours. Taking a pluralistic view, our findings have revealed that home exchangers are entrepreneurial in the meanings they attach to their homes. However, this is softened by authoritative performances …

  • Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare Vol. 48, No. 1

    Wendy Murphy, J M Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•2021

Compared to affluent consumers, the consumption practices of poor and low-income consumers have received less attention in the global North, where they have been marginalized as flawed. This paper hopes to address this neglect by providing an exploratory profile of poor and low-income consumers in the United States. It will challenge that these consumers are flawed by explaining how they participate in consumer society via exploitative inclusion an…

  • Therapeutic Servicescapes and Market-Mediated Performances of Emotional Suffering

    Open Access•Leighanne Higgins, K Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2019•Cited by: 25•References: 56

We introduce the concept of therapeutic servicescapes, defined as consumption settings where emplaced, market-mediated performances compensate for sociocultural dilemmas. Our focus is on the localization of emotions that are emplaced in specific sociospatial features and collectively reproduced through ritualized consumer performances. This ethnographic study of religious pilgrimage consumption reveals that the therapeutic servicescape comprises …

  • Death in a consumer culture

    K Hamilton•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2018•References: 2

Although our marketing and consumer research journal pages are not completely absent of death narratives, death does remain under-theorised. Despite the inevitability of death, for many it remains

  • Death of buildings in consumer culture

    Stephanie Anderson, Andrea Tonner et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 69

We propose that focusing on the death of buildings has much to offer in terms of our understanding of consumer culture. The aim of this paper is to explore the death of buildings from the perspective of consumers who have an interest in exploring obsolete buildings. Drawing on an ethnographic study of urban exploration, we uncover consumer understandings of death and mortality. We make a number of contributions. First, we demonstrate how death te…

  • Low-income Families and Coping through Brands

    Open Access•K Hamilton•ARTICLE•Sociology•2012•Cited by: 19•References: 25

This article highlights the paradoxical coping strategies employed by low-income families. Based on in-depth interviews with 30 families in the UK, it is demonstrated that individuals initiate strategies to avoid the social effects of stigmatization and alleviate threats to social identity. In particular, families engage in conspicuous consumption, with emphasis on ensuring children have access to the 'right' brands. This can be interpreted in tw…

  • Low‐income families

    Open Access•K Hamilton•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009•Cited by: 10•References: 37

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on low‐income families who are excluded from consumer culture. It explores their experiences and responses to material deprivation, social deprivation and stigmatization. Design/methodology/approach Given the need for identification and calculation of exclusion thresholds to be supplemented by the voice of the excluded themselves, the study is based on qualitative analysis of 30 in‐depth interviews wi…

  • Genuine Savings Rates in Developing Countries

K Hamilton, M Clemens et al.•ARTICLE•The World Bank Economic Review•1999

Augmented measures of savings and wealth in the national accounts are critical to conceptualizing and achieving sustainable development. After developing the theory of genuine savings—traditional net savings less the value of resource depletion and environmental degradation plus the value of investment in human capital—this article presents empirical estimates for developing countries. These calculations account for resource depletion and carbon …
